At least 12 people have tragically lost their lives in a devastating road accident at the Migaa area along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.

The accident happened in the early hours of Friday, March 14, at around 2 a.m. when a trailer transporting coffee seeds lost control and collided head-on with a 14-seater matatu carrying 11 passengers.

According to reports, the trailer’s brakes failed as it approached the notorious black spot, leading to the deadly collision. Sadly, all the matatu passengers died on the spot due to the impact.

Eyewitnesses and video footage obtained by Newshub.co.ke showed the extent of the destruction, with the matatu completely wrecked—its windscreen shattered, windows broken, and seats displaced. The tires were also deflated, further illustrating the severity of the crash.

The trailer, which was en route to Eldoret at the time, also suffered major damage to its front section. Footage from the scene showed rescuers struggling to retrieve bodies trapped under the mangled wreckage.

Emergency response teams from the Kenya Red Cross Society and the Nakuru Disaster Management Unit quickly arrived at the scene to assist in rescue operations and rush survivors to the hospital.

The accident caused a massive traffic snarl-up on the busy highway, leaving motorists stranded for hours. Many were forced to use alternative routes to avoid the growing congestion.

Police officers later arrived at the scene, cordoned off the area, and launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.

Confirming the tragic incident, Police Spokesperson Michael Muchiri stated that the accident claimed the lives of nine men, four women, and a child, including individuals inside the trailer.

While addressing the media, Muchiri urged motorists to be extremely cautious when approaching the Migaa area, as it is a well-known accident black spot.

This is not the first time a fatal accident has occurred in this area. In August last year, another horrific crash claimed 14 lives and left 36 others injured when a Coast Bus lost control.

The bus, which was traveling from Kericho to Nakuru, reportedly suffered brake failure, hit a personal vehicle, and rolled into a ditch.

Authorities continue to urge drivers to observe speed limits and ensure their vehicles are in proper condition to prevent further tragedies on this deadly stretch of road.
