Super Metro: Passengers Panic, Demand to Exit After Man Falls from Matatu and Dies

New details have emerged about the tragic death of Gilbert Thuo, who fell from a Super Metro matatu along Thika Superhighway and died instantly. The horrifying incident, which happened on Sunday, has sparked outrage among Kenyans and left Thuo’s family devastated.

How the Tragedy Unfolded

According to eyewitnesses, Thuo fell from the moving matatu while it was speeding. Passengers inside the vehicle were horrified, with some reportedly trying to jump out while the vehicle was still in motion.

The matatu driver and conductor briefly stopped to check what had happened but, shockingly, attempted to continue the journey without taking any immediate action.

However, the terrified passengers screamed in panic and demanded to be let out of the vehicle. Some eyewitnesses outside the matatu insisted that the driver should take the vehicle to the nearest police station instead of fleeing the scene.

Grieving Mother Speaks Out

Speaking to the media, Thuo’s heartbroken mother shared what she had learned from eyewitnesses who saw the accident unfold.

She said young bystanders, many of them Gen-Z, told her that after her son fell, passengers inside the matatu reacted frantically, as if they were trying to alight even before the vehicle came to a full stop.

“When my son fell on the Thika Superhighway, the driver and conductor briefly stepped out to check, but they returned to the vehicle and tried to drive away. That’s when the passengers screamed and demanded to be let out,” she recounted emotionally.

She added that when they visited the police station, they found the matatu involved in the accident parked there. “I even saw the driver’s wife at the station because her husband had already been detained,” she revealed.

Gilbert Thuo’s Wife Mourns His Sudden Death

The late Thuo’s wife also spoke tearfully, recalling how she was eagerly waiting for him to return home, only to receive devastating news of his death.

She explained that her husband had just started a new job in Kahawa and was in his second week of work. He was on his way home to spend time with his family when tragedy struck.

“I had called him earlier because I wanted him to get a few things for the kids’ school, but his phone went unanswered. Later, I received a call from a woman using his phone, and that’s when I was informed of the accident,” she recalled. “I was in complete shock. I rushed to my mother-in-law’s house to tell her what had happened.”

Conflicting Reports Raise Questions About Thuo’s Death

As Kenyans react to the tragedy, there are conflicting reports about what exactly led to Thuo’s fall. While some unverified claims suggest that he was forcefully pushed out of the matatu after a dispute over fare payment, others insist that he accidentally fell.

However, his family has dismissed claims of a fare dispute, clarifying that Thuo had money in his M-Pesa account, making it unlikely that he was arguing with the conductor over bus fare.

Despite the conflicting accounts, Thuo’s family is demanding justice, and Kenyans online have rallied behind them, calling for answers.

Public Outrage as Kenyans Demand Justice

Many Kenyans have taken to social media to express their anger over the incident. Some have shared similar experiences where passengers were almost thrown out of moving vehicles over small fare disagreements.

Favour Janette wrote: “Fellow Kenyans, we need to intervene in such cases! Why should someone lose their life over KSh 30? This is so heartbreaking.”

Caroline Wanjira commented: “I witnessed a similar incident just last week. A high school student was almost thrown out of a matatu over a KSh 20 fare.”

Mercy Migarekavaya added: “The conductor should have simply told the driver to stop and asked the man to alight in a respectful manner. This whole tragedy could have been avoided.”

Super Metro Responds to Public Backlash

Following days of public outrage, Super Metro finally broke its silence on Wednesday, March 12, addressing the tragic event.

In an official statement released on social media, the company confirmed that investigations were underway. They also announced the immediate suspension of the matatu crew involved in the incident.

Super Metro further assured Kenyans that they would implement stricter security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

As the investigation continues, Thuo’s grieving family and the public are demanding accountability, urging authorities to ensure that justice is served.
