Professor Makau Mutua has strongly denied claims that he secretly met with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and former Attorney General Githu Muigai on Friday, March 14.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on March 15, Mutua dismissed the reports, clarifying that he has never met Gachagua and has no intention of doing so.
He specifically refuted allegations that the meeting took place at Sarvid Garden along Kiambu Road.
“Let me set the record straight. I did not meet Gachagua or former Attorney General Githu Muigai at Sarvid Garden on Friday, March 14. In fact, I have never met Mr. Gachagua and have no plans to,” Mutua wrote.
He, however, acknowledged meeting with his friend Paul Muite for a meal, saying they caught up over Nyama Choma. Taking a swipe at those spreading the rumors, he remarked, “Too many idle people.”
Claims Sparked by Maverick Aoko
The allegations stemmed from claims made by blogger Scophine Aoko Otieno, popularly known as Maverick Aoko.
On March 14, Aoko alleged that Mutua, a known ally of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, was seen having a secret meeting with Gachagua and Muigai at Sarvid Garden.
“Wa Munyoro (Gachagua), Githu Muigai, and Makau Mutua, who is Raila’s close associate, are currently meeting at Sarvid Gardens, behind Quickmart, Kiambu Road. Interesting times ahead. Don’t worry, I will keep updating you,” Aoko posted.
Gachagua Open to Working with Raila
These claims emerged amid political realignments, with Gachagua recently expressing openness to working with Odinga.
Despite Odinga’s ongoing engagements with President William Ruto’s administration, Gachagua indicated that forming a political alliance with the former Prime Minister was still an option.
He emphasized that there were no conditions for such an alliance and that Odinga had the freedom to choose his political path.
Earlier, on March 3, ODM National Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga revealed that Odinga would consider Gachagua’s offer to collaborate.
Speaking on NTV’s show Fixing the Nation, Wanga hinted that ODM would assess all possibilities before making a decision.
“When considering cooperation, you have to evaluate what aligns most closely with your beliefs. So, all these aspects will be carefully examined,” she stated.
Growing Speculation Over Political Realignments
Reports of Mutua’s alleged meeting with Gachagua have gained traction as high-profile political figures continue seeking positions in the new Ruto-Raila political handshake.
According to a Nation report, influential figures have been lobbying for government jobs in light of an expected cabinet and principal secretaries reshuffle.
Insiders indicate that allies of Gachagua within the government are concerned about the looming changes and their potential political implications.
As speculation continues, Raila’s next political moves remain a subject of keen interest, with many waiting to see whether he will align himself with Gachagua or continue strengthening ties with President Ruto.
