Sonko Addresses Travelling to Vietnam Over Nduta’s Case

Sonko Denies Traveling to Vietnam Over Nduta’s Case

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has refuted claims that he traveled to Vietnam as part of a government delegation working to stop the execution of Margaret Nduta.

Speaking on Tuesday morning, Sonko clarified that he was still in Kenya and dismissed a video circulating on social media that suggested he was in Vietnam. He explained that the clip, which had been widely shared on TikTok, was misleading and that he had not left the country.

The viral footage falsely claimed that Sonko had flown to Vietnam to meet government officials in an effort to halt the execution of Nduta, a 37-year-old Kenyan woman sentenced to death for drug trafficking.

Addressing the matter, Sonko explained that the video supposedly showing him in Vietnam was actually taken in his Nairobi office during a meeting with Chinese officials.

“I have seen a false story trending on TikTok claiming that I have traveled to Vietnam to intervene in Margaret Nduta’s case. This misinformation is being spread by a blogger,” Sonko stated.

“The truth is, this is not Vietnam. If you look closely at the background of the photo, you will recognize my office. Even the individuals in the image are not Vietnamese; they are Chinese officials who visited my office in Nairobi,” he clarified.

Despite refuting the claims, Sonko urged President William Ruto’s administration to take action by investigating and arresting the main suspect responsible for sending Nduta to Vietnam.

He stressed the importance of a thorough probe by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and other law enforcement agencies to analyze Nduta’s phone records and identify her accomplices.

Sonko’s statement came just hours after Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary revealed that officials from the Kenyan embassy in Thailand had traveled to Hanoi, Vietnam, in a last-minute effort to secure Nduta’s release.

Nduta was sentenced to death after a Vietnamese court found her guilty of drug trafficking, and she was scheduled for execution on Monday, March 17, at approximately 4:30 p.m.

Foreign Affairs PS Korir Sing’Oei, speaking to Citizen TV on Monday, confirmed that Kenyan representatives in Thailand had been dispatched to Vietnam to negotiate for clemency.

He further stated that the Kenyan government was pushing for a stay of execution to allow more discussions between the two nations in hopes of securing Nduta’s freedom.
