The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has officially suspended the operating license of Super Metro Limited.
The company will not be allowed to operate until it fully complies with the Public Service Vehicles (PSV) Regulations of 2014 and meets other conditions set by the authority.
In a public notice issued on Thursday, March 20, NTSA also warned passengers against boarding Super Metro vehicles, emphasizing that the suspension is in place until all regulatory requirements are met.
“This is to inform the public that the Authority has suspended Super Metro Limited’s operator license until the company fully complies with the Public Service Vehicles Regulations, 2014, along with other specified conditions,” the statement read.
As part of the enforcement measures, traffic police officers have been instructed to impound any Super Metro vehicles found operating in violation of the suspension.
NTSA revealed that after conducting a detailed assessment of the company, it discovered multiple compliance failures.
Out of Super Metro’s 523 registered vehicles, 15 were found to have expired inspection certificates, while eight did not have valid Road Service Licences (RSL).
Additionally, NTSA established that some of the drivers under the SACCO lacked the necessary qualifications, posing a serious risk to passenger safety.
Steps Required for License Reinstatement
Before Super Metro’s license can be restored, the company must fulfill several conditions. NTSA has directed them to submit 294 vehicles flagged for violations to the Likoni Motor Vehicle Inspection Centre for compliance checks.
The company must also ensure that all vehicles have updated inspection certificates and road service licenses.
Furthermore, 42 drivers with records of speed violations must undergo a retest at the Likoni Driver Test Centre.
This directive follows a retest conducted on March 10, where 64 Super Metro drivers failed, leading to the suspension of their driving licenses.
The SACCO has also been instructed to provide formal employment contracts for all its drivers and staff.
NTSA demands proof of compliance with labor laws, including six months’ worth of staff payroll records, Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax deductions, as well as contributions to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).
To further enhance safety, Super Metro is required to conduct a road safety training session for all its drivers.
After completing the training, the company must submit a detailed report to NTSA, including photos, minutes of the session, and an attendance register. The sensitization program will be overseen by NTSA officials.
Safety Concerns and Road Accidents
The suspension follows a series of road accidents involving Super Metro vehicles, some of which have resulted in fatalities.
A recent incident on March 12 shocked the public after a tout allegedly pushed a passenger out of a moving bus for failing to pay his fare.
Although Super Metro took immediate action by suspending the tout responsible, many other complaints have been raised about reckless driving.
Passengers have reported that some drivers engage in overspeeding and reckless road behavior, endangering the lives of commuters.
With these concerns in mind, NTSA has made it clear that Super Metro must take serious steps to improve safety standards and regulatory compliance before being allowed to resume operations.
