Governor Sakaja Steps In to Support KMTC Student Hawking at Night
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has come to the aid of Edna Mwango, a Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student, after her story was aired on Citizen TV. Mwango, who studies orthopaedic and trauma medicine, has been working as a hawker at night in Kisii to afford her school fees.
In a statement shared on Thursday, March 20, Governor Sakaja announced that he would fully sponsor her education and provide upkeep support until she completes her studies.
“I will take care of her school fees and ensure she has everything she needs to complete her studies. Edna is doing everything possible to stay in school, and her determination is truly inspiring.
We will support her so she can achieve her dream of becoming a doctor,” Sakaja told Citizen TV.
Struggles of a Determined Student
At just 23 years old, Mwango has faced immense challenges in her pursuit of education. She has been forced to defer her studies twice due to financial difficulties.
Raised by her grandparents, she turned to hawking as a means of survival. She grows vegetables and Napier grass on a small quarter-acre plot, which she later sells at night in Kisii town to raise money for her school fees and daily needs.
“I do not have any other source of income. I plant vegetables and Napier grass, which I sell to make some money. Balancing school and work has been extremely difficult,” Mwango shared.
Despite her efforts, the little money she earns from hawking is not enough to sustain her education.
KMTC Principal Confirms Her Struggles
KMTC Kisii Campus Principal, Daniel Onsate, acknowledged that the institution was aware of Mwango’s struggles and had been looking for well-wishers to assist her.
“She has had a very difficult time raising her school fees. She has been doing odd jobs, including selling vegetables and tomatoes near where she stays.
This is not the kind of life a student should be living, but she has endured it because she is determined to complete her studies,” Principal Onsate explained.
He further emphasized that Mwango had been seeking help from anyone willing to assist her in clearing her fee balance.
Governor Sakaja’s Pledge
Governor Sakaja responded to this call for help, confirming that his administration would take full responsibility for her education.
With this support, the governor expressed hope that Mwango would now be able to concentrate fully on her studies without the burden of financial struggles weighing her down.
His intervention is a significant relief for Mwango, who can now focus on achieving her dream of becoming a doctor.
