A day after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) suspended the operations of the well-known commuter bus company, Super Metro, reports indicated that the company’s minibuses were still on the road.
A survey by Newshub.co.ke confirmed that Super Metro vehicles continued to operate, ferrying passengers across Nairobi city despite the suspension.
This development comes after NTSA issued a public warning, advising Kenyans not to board the company’s minibuses. The transport regulator also directed traffic police officers to seize any Super Metro vehicles found operating.
Why Super Metro is Still Operating
Despite NTSA’s directive, Super Metro officials explained that they had not yet received a formal notice from the transport authority informing them of their suspension.
Speaking to the media on Thursday afternoon, the company’s representatives maintained that they could not halt operations without an official written notice from NTSA.
“The reason Super Metro vehicles are still operating is because, while the suspension has been announced publicly, there has been no official written notice,” stated Kushian Muchiri, the Chief Executive Officer of the Federation of Public Transport Sector.
Super Metro officials further defended their stance, arguing that the suspension should not apply to all their vehicles.
They emphasized that only a few minibuses had been found to have violated the law, and it was unfair to punish the entire company over the actions of a few crew members.
“All Super Metro vehicles should not have been suspended. You cannot halt the operations of an entire company just because of the actions of a few individuals,” one of the company’s officials remarked.
Additionally, the company’s leadership criticized NTSA’s decision, terming it as extreme and unfair. They warned that the move could result in job losses for many Kenyans who rely on Super Metro for employment.
NTSA’s Official Statement on the Suspension
On Thursday, March 20, NTSA released an official statement announcing the suspension of Super Metro’s operating license.
The authority cited non-compliance with the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) Regulations as the primary reason for the suspension.
“This is to notify the public that the Authority has suspended the operating license of Super Metro Limited until the company fully complies with the Public Service Vehicles Regulations, 2014, and meets all other required conditions,” NTSA stated.
The Authority further warned the public against boarding Super Metro minibuses and instructed the traffic police to impound any of the company’s vehicles found operating in violation of the suspension.
As the situation unfolds, many commuters and employees of the company remain uncertain about what lies ahead.
Super Metro officials have insisted that they are awaiting an official communication from NTSA before making any further decisions regarding their operations.
