An unknown number of people have tragically lost their lives, while others are reported to have sustained serious injuries following a road accident near Two Rivers Mall in Kiambu County.
The incident, which involved a 14-seater matatu, took place on Friday morning around 8:00 AM along the Ruaka-Githogoro highway.
Witnesses at the scene revealed that the accident occurred when the matatu, which was heading towards Kiambu Town from Ruaka, lost control, veered off the road, and collided with a billboard before finally landing in a ditch.
Reports suggest that the vehicle, a Public Service Vehicle (PSV), was speeding at the time of the crash.
Videos and photos circulating on social media show the matatu severely damaged, with broken seats, a shattered windscreen, and deflated tyres.
Glass pieces were seen scattered all over the road, with a group of local residents trying to rescue those trapped inside the wreckage.
After the accident, emergency services rushed the injured passengers to Kiambu Level 5 Hospital for immediate treatment. Police officers also arrived at the scene shortly afterward to assess the situation and manage the aftermath.
This accident comes just one week after a similar tragedy occurred in the Migaa area along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway. On March 14, a trailer carrying coffee seeds lost control, causing a deadly crash with a 14-seater matatu. The collision killed 13 people, with 12 of them dying on the spot.
According to the police report, the trailer experienced a brake failure as it approached a notorious black spot, resulting in a head-on collision with the matatu, which was filled with passengers.
Footage of that scene revealed the matatu was completely destroyed, while the trailer only sustained damage to its front end.
Rescuers were seen struggling to extract the bodies from the wreckage, as the accident led to significant traffic congestion along the highway. Motorists were forced to find alternative routes to avoid the massive traffic jam caused by the crash.
Both incidents highlight the ongoing dangers on Kenya’s roads, especially involving speeding vehicles and public transport.
Authorities continue to urge drivers to be more cautious and observe speed limits to prevent such devastating accidents.
