MPs Endorse Oparanya for Deputy President Position in 2027

Members of Parliament from the Western region have strongly backed Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary (CS) Wycliffe Oparanya, naming him as their preferred candidate for the Deputy President position in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

The MPs made their endorsement under what they have called the “Khwisero Declaration,” a statement asserting that Oparanya has demonstrated the leadership qualities necessary to represent the region in a significant national position such as Deputy President.

The declaration also highlighted his proven track record over the years as someone capable of leading the region at the national level.

Leading this charge are Khwisero MP Christopher Aseka and Ikolomani MP Benard Shinali, along with several other local leaders.

They argued that it is high time for the Western region to step out from the sidelines and actively seek top leadership roles.

“It’s time for us to stop waiting for the top positions to be handed to us through backdoor deals.

Oparanya has proven his worth, but now is the time for us to come together, form a strong political presence, and engage in serious negotiations for 2027,” MP Aseka said.

Another MP added, “Oparanya must step forward from the background and take his rightful place at the forefront of national politics. In 2027, he has the potential to be the Deputy President of this country.”

The MPs collectively emphasized that Oparanya must play a key role in national leadership discussions, pointing out that the Mulembe community, with its large population, deserves a central voice in the country’s decision-making process.

Oparanya’s political career spans several years, during which he has held multiple important positions.

His political journey began in 2002 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Butere Constituency, defeating Amukowa Anangwe.

He served in this role for ten years before being appointed by the late President Mwai Kibaki in 2008 as Minister for Planning and Vision 2030, a role he held until 2012.

In 2013, Oparanya was elected as the first governor of Kakamega County, a position he held for two terms until 2022. During his tenure as governor, Oparanya also served as the Chairperson of the Council of Governors (COG) and was consistently recognized as one of the best-performing governors in Kenya.

This united front by Western region MPs signals a strategic push to elevate the region’s influence in national politics and ensure that its voice is heard at the highest levels of government.

With Oparanya’s leadership and the support of local MPs, the Western region aims to play a more central role in Kenya’s political future.
