Mumias East Member of Parliament, Peter Salasya, faced a dramatic and humiliating ordeal at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, March 23, when he was attacked and forcefully ejected from the venue.
Salasya was among thousands of Kenyans who had gathered to witness Kenya’s crucial World Cup qualifier match against Gabon.
However, what was supposed to be an exciting football experience turned into a nightmare for the outspoken MP as he found himself embroiled in a confrontation with a section of the crowd.
Videos obtained by Newshub.co.ke captured chaotic scenes of Salasya being manhandled by an angry group of fans who aggressively pushed him toward the stadium’s exit.
At one point, some individuals attempted to physically assault him, while another person in the crowd was seen throwing what appeared to be a plastic container in his direction.
The altercation did not end inside the stadium, as the commotion spilled over to the parking lot, where more fans gathered around the embattled legislator, urging him to leave the premises.
Although the exact reason for the hostile reception remains unclear, some fans in the crowd were heard chanting, “Respect the President!”—suggesting that Salasya’s ejection might have been linked to remarks or actions he made concerning President William Ruto.
President Ruto was in attendance at Nyayo Stadium that afternoon, having arrived at the match shortly after making an appearance at the World Rally Championship (WRC) event in Naivasha.
Following the incident, Salasya took to social media and seemingly dismissed his critics with a cryptic message: “I didn’t want to commit blood in my hands. I had options, but I chose peace.”
The chaos surrounding Salasya’s expulsion was just one of several dramatic events that unfolded before the Kenya-Gabon match.
Earlier, hundreds of eager fans overpowered security personnel and broke through a gate to gain entry into the stadium.
It remains unclear where security officials were at the time, but reports suggest they were overwhelmed by the sheer number of fans attempting to enter.
Additionally, a limited number of ticket-scanning points worsened the situation, leading to long queues and growing frustration among ticket-holding fans who had legally paid to watch the game.
