Two Kenyan politicians lost their lives after their vehicle was involved in a fatal accident in Uganda.
According to reports, the two were among four individuals who perished in the accident, which occurred along the Moroto-Napak road at Tapaach.
Newshub.co.ke has confirmed that the four victims have been identified as Philemon Lotudo, Elijah Lopuke, Jackson Kariwoi, and Ben Ikong.
Disturbing images from the scene reveal the devastating impact of the crash, with the black SUV they were traveling in reduced to a mangled wreck.
Further reports indicate that Kariwoi and Ikong died instantly, while Lotudo succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to the hospital. The fourth victim tragically lost his life while receiving medical attention.
One of the deceased had contested for the Kapenguria MP seat in the 2022 general elections, while the other had vied for the MCA position.
Elijah Lopuke, in particular, had been making significant strides in his political career. In May 2024, he secured the UDA chairmanship for Alale Ward in West Pokot, solidifying his position as a rising political figure in the region.
West Pokot County Commissioner Khaliff Abdullahi confirmed the tragic incident, stating that investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause of the accident.
It has also been revealed that the vehicle they were traveling in was affiliated with the West Pokot County government.
Following the incident, authorities from both Kenya and Uganda worked together to facilitate the repatriation of the bodies. The remains of the deceased were transported to Cherangany Mortuary in Kitale.
The victims were part of a delegation that was accompanying Pokot South MP David Pkosing on a cross-border visit between Kenya and Uganda.
Sook Ward MCA, Martin Komongiro, narrowly escaped the tragedy but sustained serious injuries. He was rushed to Eldoret for specialized treatment.
