A boda boda rider in Meru County was forced to leap off his moving motorcycle on Sunday night to avoid being attacked by a gang wielding machetes.
The gang targeted the motorbike, which was carrying a couple— a man and his girlfriend—on their way home.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the attack took place around 5 am in the Gakoromone area.
The DCI reported that the gang, consisting of three armed individuals also on a motorbike, ambushed the boda boda rider and his passengers.
Fearing for his safety, the rider jumped off the bike, allowing it to drift out of control and crash, with the couple still on it.
The two passengers, left stranded after the crash, endured a terrifying ordeal as the gang continued with their criminal act.
The assailants robbed the man and woman of their phones and cash before turning violent. The gang dragged the woman away and assaulted her, while the man tried to stop them.
In retaliation, one of the attackers stabbed the man in the inner thigh. Despite the injury, the assault continued.
Luckily, a group of good Samaritans came to their rescue after finding the injured couple. They quickly rushed them to Meru Teaching & Referral Hospital for medical attention.
Both the man and woman received treatment and were later discharged.
The DCI has assured the public that they are actively investigating the case and pursuing the attackers.
“The DCI detectives have launched an intense manhunt for the criminals, and we are determined to bring them to justice,” the statement read.
The police are also appealing to anyone with information about the suspects to come forward. This attack highlights a growing concern within the boda boda industry, where criminal gangs are increasingly using motorcycles for quick escapes after committing violent crimes.
Recent statistics from the National Crime Research Centre indicate that robberies involving violence account for nearly 53% of the crimes committed by boda boda riders, making it a serious issue in the region.
