KRA Announces Mass Auction of Goods Left Unclaimed in Nairobi

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has issued a formal notice regarding the mass auction of goods left unclaimed at its warehouses.

Over 100 businesses have been notified that their goods, which have been sitting idle in KRA storage facilities, need to be cleared within the next 30 days or they will be auctioned.

The goods in question, including a wide range of products, were either intended for delivery to Kenya or neighboring South Sudan.

These items are currently stored in shipping vessels at two key locations: the KRA Customs Warehouse Keeper and the Inland Container Depot in Nairobi.

The items set to be auctioned off include a variety of goods such as upholstery materials, electronics, industrial machinery, and textiles.

In addition, products like sugar, biscuits, kitchenware, automotive lubricants, cigarettes, and even meat products will also be up for grabs.

There is also a list of specialized items like aluminium solar mounting systems, electric motor spare parts, and grocery products.

According to KRA, these goods will be auctioned between May 5th and May 9th, 2025. The auction will take place online through a dedicated portal, and interested buyers have been encouraged to view the goods in person on specific dates—April 30th and May 2nd, 2025—during working hours.

The auctioned items, primarily stored in shipping containers (both 40-foot and 20-foot sizes), will be available at various locations, including Syokimau Inland Container Depot, Autoport, and the Inland Container Depot in Nairobi.

In accordance with Section 42 of the East African Community Customs Management Act (EACCMA) 2004, the goods will be considered abandoned unless they are collected from the Customs Warehouse Keeper within the specified time frame. Failure to do so will result in the goods being disposed of as per the law.

This move by KRA is a part of a larger initiative to clear storage space and dispose of uncollected goods. Earlier this month, KRA also announced another public auction of items like sofa sets, chairs, car parts, and office equipment.

This auction, in partnership with Phillips International Auctioneers, will take place on Wednesday, March 26th, 2025, and will feature goods stored in KRA warehouses across the country.
