A police officer in Nairobi’s Kamukunji area narrowly escaped an alleged assassination attempt after a violent confrontation with a fellow officer over a love affair in the early hours of Wednesday.
The shocking incident, recorded under OB No. 02/26/03/2025 at around 4:30 a.m., reportedly unfolded when two officers got into a heated confrontation that nearly turned deadly.
Argument Turns Deadly
According to a report filed at Kamukunji Police Station, the drama began when Constable Piro, who was on duty with two other officers from Muthurwa Police Post, excused himself to retrieve his mobile phone, which he had left charging at a nearby bar and lodge.
However, upon arrival, Piro was confronted by another officer, identified as Constable Juma, who accused him of having an affair with his girlfriend.
Witnesses said the situation quickly escalated into a heated argument, during which Juma repeatedly slapped Piro before pulling out his AK-47 rifle and firing a shot.
The bullet narrowly missed Piro but pierced through a metal wall and a grill. Fortunately, he managed to escape unharmed and rushed to Kamukunji Police Station to report the attack.
Investigation Underway
Following the report, crime scene investigators were dispatched to analyze the area, but they were unable to recover the spent cartridge.
Meanwhile, Juma initially fled the scene but later surrendered to authorities. His firearm was seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the increasing cases of police officers using their firearms in personal disputes.
Rising Cases of Police-Involved Shootings
Since the beginning of the year, there have been at least five reported cases of officers firing their weapons in personal disagreements or under unclear circumstances across the country.
In February, an officer in Nakuru shot and injured a colleague following a drunken altercation. Just weeks later, a traffic officer in Mombasa opened fire during an argument with a boda boda rider, accidentally wounding a bystander.
The latest shooting in Kamukunji adds to the growing concerns over discipline and firearm misuse within the police service.
Authorities have assured the public that thorough investigations will be conducted, and necessary actions will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
