Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni has explained why the party decided to support former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i in his bid for the presidency in the 2027 elections.
Speaking on Monday evening during an interview on TV47, Kioni revealed that Matiang’i was the only politician who directly approached the party and expressed his interest in running for the country’s top seat under the Jubilee Party.
According to Kioni, since Matiang’i was the only member of the party who showed interest in the presidential race, Jubilee had no reason to deny him the opportunity.
He further emphasized that the former CS would soon make an official announcement to confirm his bid and answer key questions about his decision.
“Matiang’i personally reached out to us, and he will soon make his official statement. We won’t have to wait too long; when he feels the time is right, he will come forward and speak,” Kioni stated.
The Jubilee Secretary General also pointed out that anyone is free to express their desire to contest for the presidency, and Matiang’i simply took that step.
“Anyone can declare their interest in running for president. Matiang’i has made his intentions clear. One of the things he has told me is that politics cannot last forever,” he added.
Jubilee Ticket Still Open for Other Aspirants
Despite the party’s decision to back Matiang’i, Kioni reassured Kenyans that the Jubilee Party remains open to other interested candidates.
He urged any other individuals who aspire to contest for the presidency through the party to come forward and engage with its leadership.
“If there is anyone else interested, they are welcome to express their ambition. Our party has over 7 million members, and as a party, it is our responsibility to promote and support our candidates,” Kioni explained.
He also disclosed that he had personally been reaching out to other potential candidates, encouraging them to consider running for the presidency.
“I have been asking some leaders why they are not stepping up for this role. The opportunity is still there, and we are open to considering more candidates,” he stated.
Kioni Criticizes Speaker Wetang’ula
During the interview, Kioni also took a swipe at National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, accusing him of disregarding court orders.
The Jubilee Secretary General criticized Wetang’ula for failing to make a clear decision on whether to step down from his position as Speaker or resign as the leader of the Ford Kenya party.
“Speaker Wetang’ula will go down in history as a leader who had no respect for court orders. There will come a time when these actions will catch up with him, and he won’t be able to hide behind his position,” Kioni remarked.
He insisted that leaders must respect the rule of law, warning that failing to do so could have long-term consequences.
