Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has urged Mt Kenya residents to be cautious about President William Ruto’s promises as he prepares to visit the region next week.
Speaking to locals in Naivasha, Nakuru County, on Saturday, March 29, Gachagua strongly criticized Ruto, accusing him of misleading Kenyans with false promises.
He claimed that the president’s continuous dishonesty was the main reason they could not work together, further alleging that Ruto often pressured him to deceive the public.
As Ruto prepares for his tour of the Mt Kenya region, Gachagua claimed that senior government officials had devised a strategy to bribe residents into cheering for the president.
While warning locals not to trust Ruto’s promises, he encouraged them to accept the money being offered but advised them against taking it home.
“The biggest problem with President Ruto’s government is dishonesty. He lies too much, and that is why our working relationship could not last,” Gachagua stated.
“He is now planning to come here with sacks of money to deceive people again. I am telling you to go ahead and receive the money, but do not carry it home,” he added.
The former DP further urged residents to negotiate for higher payments since Ruto’s visit, in his view, was only meant to waste their time with empty promises.
He emphasized that those who listen to the speeches should demand Ksh3,000, women cheering should be paid Ksh10,000, and those clapping should charge Ksh2,000.
Additionally, Gachagua cautioned the locals against using the money for investments, warning that it could bring bad luck. Instead, he advised them to spend it in the marketplace or use it to settle debts.
“That money should not be mixed with what you already have. It should only be spent outside the home because it is cursed,” he remarked.
President Ruto is scheduled to begin his development tour in the Mt Kenya region in the first week of April, following a series of meetings with local leaders.
His itinerary includes visits to Laikipia, Meru, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Murang’a, Tharaka Nithi, and Embu counties before concluding the tour in Nyeri and Kiambu on April 5.
