President William Ruto has revealed details about his fallout with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, shedding light on what led to their strained relationship.
Speaking during an interview in Sagana, just before his Mount Kenya tour, Ruto disclosed that Gachagua’s failure to align himself with the Kenya Kwanza government’s agenda was a key factor in their rift.
Ruto accused Gachagua of constantly clashing with government officials, including Members of Parliament and even his close aide, Farouk Kibet.
According to the President, he personally advised Gachagua to avoid unnecessary conflicts and focus on his role as Deputy President, but his advice was ignored.
“I sat him down and told him, ‘You are the Deputy President. Why are you fighting with everyone? Just let them do their work and focus on yours.’ But he did not listen,” Ruto explained.
Another major issue that worsened their relationship was Gachagua’s reluctance to support and defend government projects in public. The President noted that when he was Deputy President under Uhuru Kenyatta, he took it upon himself to promote the government’s initiatives, often appearing on TV and speaking in public forums to explain their programs.
“As Deputy President, one of my key duties was to defend and explain government projects. I even went to more TV interviews than the President himself because that was my responsibility.
But have you ever seen Gachagua do that? Not even once in two years did he speak up for government projects,” Ruto pointed out.
He emphasized that this failure to actively support the administration’s initiatives, such as the Affordable Housing Program, Universal Health Coverage (UHC), and improvements in education, contributed significantly to their fallout.
“I reminded him that we had made promises to Kenyans about housing, UHC, and teachers’ salaries. These were part of our manifesto. If he couldn’t defend these projects, how were we supposed to run the government?” Ruto added.
As tensions between the two leaders grew, divisions also emerged among Members of Parliament allied to them.
This led to some MPs pushing for Gachagua’s impeachment, a move that Ruto claims he personally tried to block twice. However, despite his efforts, many MPs had already decided to remove Gachagua from office.
Ruto further alleged that after their relationship completely broke down, Gachagua began making threats, vowing to ensure that Ruto became a one-term President.
This, according to Ruto, only intensified the battle between MPs allied to the Kenya Kwanza administration and those supporting Gachagua.
The President also responded to Gachagua’s recent claim that the government has done nothing for the Mount Kenya region.
He dismissed the allegations, pointing out that several key projects had been implemented in the area, including the construction of a road that reportedly leads to Gachagua’s own residence in Wamunyoro.
Through this interview, Ruto painted a picture of a Deputy President who was unwilling to work as a team player, ultimately leading to his impeachment.
