UDA Senator Calls For the Firing of CS Alfred Mutua Over Job Scams

Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba has urged President William Ruto to fire Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua, blaming him for failing to curb the rising cases of job scams in Kenya.

Speaking in the Senate on Wednesday, April 2, Orwoba accused Mutua of incompetence, arguing that he has not done enough to protect Kenyans from fraudulent job recruitment schemes.

The senator further claimed that some Kenyans had been conned even within the Ministry of Labour offices while seeking opportunities to work abroad.

“I am calling on the President to fire the Labour CS because he is aware of what is happening, and he knows why we are angry,” Orwoba stated.

“This individual is incompetent, and his interests are clearly not aligned with the needs of Kenyans. It is only fair that he steps down or is dismissed,” she added.

Job Scams Leave Many Kenyans Stranded

Orwoba also criticized leaders who argue that job seekers should be “wise enough” to avoid falling into the hands of fraudsters. She insisted that most victims are simply desperate Kenyans trying to earn a living.

“How can you tell Kenyans to just be wise and avoid these scams? The government exists to serve and protect its people. If a job opportunity is advertised under a government-related initiative,

Kenyans should not have to question its legitimacy. This is a failure of leadership, and blaming victims is unfair,” she remarked.

Her concerns come just days after hundreds of Kenyans stormed the offices of a recruitment agency in Nairobi on March 27, demanding refunds for jobs abroad that never materialized.

Some victims revealed that they had already traveled to destinations like Mauritius, only to find themselves stranded without employment. Others had paid large sums—some as high as Ksh500,000—without securing any job placement.

“I paid Ksh423,000 to work in Mauritius, but upon arrival, I was denied entry and told my visa was only for tourism,” one victim shared.

The company in question operates from Biashara Plaza in Nairobi and has a presence on social media, including a Facebook page with 1.4k followers.

Should the Labour CS Be Fired?

While Orwoba’s call for Mutua’s dismissal highlights a real issue, there are mixed opinions on whether firing the CS is the best solution.

On one hand, removing him could signal that the government is serious about tackling job scams and holding officials accountable.

On the other hand, simply firing Mutua may not address the root problem of fraudulent job agencies, which often operate outside direct government control.

A more effective approach could involve stricter regulation, increased public awareness campaigns, and stronger legal action against fraudulent recruiters.

Ultimately, the growing number of job scams demands urgent action from the government to protect Kenyans from exploitation.

Whether that means replacing the CS or introducing new measures, the priority should be ensuring that job seekers are not left vulnerable to fraud.
