A police officer is currently recovering from serious injuries after allegedly attempting to take his own life while on duty at the Marigat Deputy County Commissioner’s (DCC) office in Baringo County.

According to reports from the authorities, the officer, who was on night guard duty, reportedly shot himself in the chin using a G3 rifle early on the morning of Thursday, April 3.

The incident has raised concerns among fellow officers and residents in the area.

Witnesses say that the officer’s colleagues were startled by the sound of a gunshot coming from the direction of the DCC compound.

When they rushed to check, they were shocked to find the officer walking around in full uniform, bleeding from a gunshot wound to his chin.

Police investigations revealed that the bullet had entered through the lower part of the officer’s chin, traveled through his mouth, and damaged his lower jaw.

The nature and direction of the injury strongly suggest a suicide attempt.

The officer had been assigned to guard the DCC offices overnight and was issued a G3 rifle. However, after the incident, he reportedly abandoned the weapon.

A search was immediately launched, and the rifle was later recovered around 100 meters behind the NG-CDF office. The rifle was found with an empty magazine.

Investigators also found one used cartridge about a meter from the location where the rifle was discovered.

In addition, 12 unused cartridges of the same caliber were recovered outside the National Disaster Management Authority’s office, located within the DCC compound.

Fellow officers noted that the constable had appeared troubled and restless throughout his shift.

They reported that, shortly before the shooting, he had mentioned hearing strange movements or noises within the compound, which had caused him unease.

Following the incident, the officer was quickly rushed to Baringo County Referral Hospital, where doctors prepared him for emergency surgery.

His current condition is yet to be fully confirmed, but medical personnel are working to save his life and manage the serious facial injuries he sustained.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident, aiming to uncover what may have led the officer to such a drastic action.

The event has sparked discussions about the mental health and well-being of police officers serving under pressure in challenging conditions.
