Gachagua Allies Blame Ruto and Sakaja After Chaos Erupts During Church Service
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has come out strongly following an incident that disrupted a church service he attended in Mwiki on Sunday, April 6.
The event, held at PCEA Church in Mwiki, turned chaotic after a group of unruly youth stormed the premises, causing panic and forcing Gachagua’s security team to intervene.
In a sharp criticism aimed at President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Gachagua condemned the attack, describing it as both “insensitive” and “unkind.”
He accused the president of going too far by allegedly sending hired goons to disrupt a place of worship.
“My President, what happened to you? Is this how far you’ve gone—sending goons to church? You’ve become bold. You sent them to Limuru last week, to Nyeri, and now to a church. This is a new low,” Gachagua said during his address at the church.
He expressed disappointment that such attacks were now being orchestrated even in places meant for prayer and peace.
Gachagua also directed blame toward the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Kenya Police Service, accusing the DIG of deliberately failing to provide police officers for security at the church event.
According to him, instructions had been issued from the top not to deploy police to any event involving him.
“We know very well that the DIG said no police should be assigned to my events. But I thank the few brave officers who still showed up,” he added.
“It’s puzzling because when the president visits Mt Kenya, he is welcomed warmly without any trouble. All we are asking for is equal respect wherever we go.”
The former deputy president emphasized that even political rivalries should not cross into religious spaces. “If you must pursue us politically, do not chase us into churches.
That is sacred ground,” he said, cautioning the president that his ties with the PCEA church had now suffered serious damage because of the incident.
The disturbance reportedly began when hundreds of youths stormed the PCEA Kasarani East Church, allegedly demanding money in exchange for attending the event.
Security officers linked to Gachagua fired shots in the air to disperse the crowd and restore order.
Several Members of Parliament who were present at the service backed Gachagua’s claims. Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru and Starehe MP Amos Maina specifically pointed fingers at Nairobi Governor Sakaja, accusing him of being the mastermind behind the attack.
“I want to send a clear message to the governor—this is unacceptable. You brought goons from Soweto, and I know those faces very well. Just know that your days in office are numbered,” Gaithiru warned firmly.
Despite the disruptions, Gachagua remained defiant. He reiterated that his political movement is gaining momentum and will officially be launched in May 2025.
Additionally, he announced plans to hold a revealing media interview on Monday, April 7, where he is expected to share more details about the ongoing political tensions and his next steps.
