Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has strongly denied reports suggesting he has joined a different political party.
This comes a few months after his Amani National Congress (ANC) party officially merged with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), which is the ruling party under President William Ruto.
On Sunday, April 6, Mudavadi’s communications office released a statement to clarify the situation. The statement made it clear that Mudavadi is fully committed to the Kenya Kwanza administration and continues to support President Ruto’s leadership.
“H.E. Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, who serves as the Prime Cabinet Secretary and also heads the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, has taken note of misleading media reports linking him to a new political outfit,” the statement read.
“To clear any confusion, Dr. Mudavadi is firmly part of the government under the Kenya Kwanza Alliance led by H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto, the President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces.”
The statement went on to remind Kenyans that ANC officially joined the Kenya Kwanza Alliance ahead of the 2022 general elections.
Eventually, on January 17, ANC merged with UDA in a move that was public and widely supported by party members.
Mudavadi’s team emphasized that his political actions have always been guided by integrity, transparency, and consistency. They firmly rejected claims that he is shifting loyalties or acting in a dishonest manner.
To add more clarity, his office said the decision to merge ANC with UDA was not forced or manipulated. Instead, it was a free and well-thought-out decision made with the full backing of ANC members and leaders.
The statement also pointed out that many former ANC officials were given senior roles within UDA. One notable example is Issa Timamy, who served as ANC’s Deputy Party Leader and is still holding a leadership position under UDA.
“Mudavadi is fully focused on fulfilling his responsibilities in government and serving the people of Kenya. He has no plans whatsoever to leave or join another political party,” the statement concluded.
During the official announcement of the merger, UDA chairperson and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire stated that UDA would adopt new symbols and colours influenced by ANC.
This was meant to reflect the spirit of unity and cooperation between the two former parties.
Additionally, ANC’s secretariat staff—including directors and other members—were brought into UDA to help steer the direction of the newly merged party.
Mbarire further explained that the merger process had faced delays in the past. One major reason was the political crisis caused by the impeachment of former Deputy Party Leader Rigathi Gachagua.
However, with the appointment of a new deputy party leader, progress resumed.
“The merger had been delayed due to some challenges, especially the impeachment of our deputy party leader at the time.
But thanks to the efforts of our new deputy party leader, we were able to overcome those challenges and successfully complete the merger process,” Mbarire said.
Overall, Mudavadi has reiterated that he is loyal to President Ruto and Kenya Kwanza, and is not involved in forming or joining any other political group.
