Former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, has firmly dismissed rumors that she and her husband, former President Barack Obama, have separated or divorced.
The speculation about their relationship began circulating after Michelle was rarely seen in public with Barack, especially when compared to their past appearances together.
One of the moments that sparked these rumors was Michelle’s absence at President Donald Trump’s inauguration, despite Barack attending.
Another significant event was Michelle not attending the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter, which added fuel to the ongoing speculation about their marriage.
However, Michelle took the opportunity to address these rumors during an appearance on the “Work in Progress” podcast.
She explained that her recent decisions to step back from being actively involved in public events with her husband were a result of her having more control over her own schedule.
She emphasized that she is now in a position to prioritize her own needs and make independent decisions as a “grown woman.”
According to Michelle, her absence from these events was misunderstood, with many jumping to the conclusion that it meant a divorce.
Reflecting on the situation, Michelle explained how society often expects women to conform to certain roles, especially when it comes to relationships. She shared, “That’s the thing that we as women struggle with—disappointing people.
So much so that when I made a decision this year to do something for myself, people couldn’t fathom it, assuming that my husband and I were divorcing.”
Michelle pointed out that this kind of speculation is part of the broader challenge women face when society doesn’t recognize them as independent decision-makers.
She added, “Society doesn’t seem to think this could just be a grown woman making a set of decisions for herself, but that’s what we face.”
Despite the rumors, Michelle and Barack’s marriage has endured for 32 years, and they are often seen as a role model for relationships.
Barack, who has Kenyan roots, frequently praises Michelle for her unwavering support throughout the years.
On their anniversary in October, Barack shared a heartfelt message on his social media, writing, “Thirty-two years together and you still take my breath away.”
The couple married in 1992, and while their relationship has often been seen as perfect, Michelle has been open about the challenges they’ve faced, especially during Barack’s time in office.
Despite these difficulties, the Obamas have sought counseling over the years, which has helped to strengthen their bond and ensure their marriage continues to thrive.
