At least seven people have lost their lives and several others have sustained injuries following a tragic road accident that happened on Friday morning at the Kamandura Junction in Kiambu County, along the busy Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
The accident occurred around 9:00 am when a 14-seater matatu, which was carrying passengers, lost control and overturned. The impact of the crash was so severe that some of the victims died on the spot, while others were seriously injured.
Residents and passersby who witnessed the crash rushed to the scene to offer help. They worked quickly to pull the injured passengers from the wreckage and took them to Tgoni Hospital for medical attention.
Eyewitnesses said the matatu was headed toward Kijabe in Kiambu County when the unfortunate incident happened. Although the exact number of passengers involved is yet to be confirmed, the crash caused a major traffic jam along the highway, forcing many motorists to divert and use alternative roads.
Photos and videos shared with Newshub.co.ke revealed the devastating condition of the matatu. The windscreen was shattered, the seats were twisted, and the tyres had burst, showing just how serious the accident was.
Shortly after the incident, traffic police officers from the Limuru area arrived at the site. They secured the accident scene and arranged for the matatu to be towed away in order to ease the heavy traffic congestion that had built up.
This horrific accident comes only hours after another deadly crash occurred at the same location on Thursday, April 10.
In that earlier incident, three people were killed when the vehicle they were traveling in lost control and plunged into a ditch. Two others survived but were left nursing injuries.
Witness reports indicated that the Thursday accident involved another matatu that was speeding. It is said the vehicle tried to overtake another car but lost control and veered off the road, instantly killing three people.
Videos from the scene showed firefighters from the Kiambu County Government working together with police officers to clear the area using water.
As a result of the accident, traffic along the highway was temporarily stopped for several hours before the wrecked vehicle was removed.
These two accidents have happened just days after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) issued a public warning to all drivers, urging them to take extra care, especially during the ongoing rainy season.
In a safety alert shared on Monday, April 7, NTSA reminded motorists to observe speed limits, ensure they are well-rested before starting any journey, maintain their vehicles in good condition, and report any reckless driving they witness.
The agency emphasized that extra caution can help prevent the increasing number of accidents being reported on Kenyan roads.
