Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has hinted that he may finally retire after President William Ruto finishes his term in office.
Speaking on Saturday during the burial of George Oduor, who was a bodyguard and close aide to ODM leader Raila Odinga, Atwoli mentioned that he has served under all the presidents Kenya has had since gaining independence.
However, he believes that President Ruto’s administration could be the last one he serves under as the head of COTU.
“I have had the honour to work with every president since Kenya became independent. I served under Jomo Kenyatta, then Daniel Arap Moi, who led the country for 24 years, followed by Mwai Kibaki, then Uhuru Kenyatta, and now you, President William Ruto.
And maybe, your government might be the last one I will serve during my time as COTU Secretary General before I go back home to Khwisero and rest,” Atwoli said during the funeral.
Atwoli’s long stay at the helm of COTU has often sparked public conversations, with many wondering when he plans to hand over the reins.
He has been in the powerful position for more than 20 years, having taken office in August 2001. Since then, he has remained a dominant figure in Kenya’s labour movement, winning re-election several times.
Throughout his leadership, Atwoli has been known for passionately championing workers’ rights, promoting social justice, and pushing for economic progress.
His outspoken nature and influence in national matters have also made him a key player in both labour and political circles.
Among those who have raised concerns about Atwoli’s extended stay in office is former Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana.
While congratulating Atwoli on the birth of his newest child, Kibwana also suggested that it might be time for him to step down and give others a chance to lead.
“I warmly congratulate Francis Atwoli and his family on the arrival of their new baby. At the same time, maybe it’s time for COTU to consider giving the Secretary General a well-earned paternity leave — and while at it, also reflect on whether trade union leadership should last for a lifetime,” Kibwana said in a subtle but pointed message.
In response to such sentiments, Atwoli defended his continued leadership, saying that he remains fully committed to his work and that his contribution is still valued and needed in the country.
He compared his role as COTU Secretary General to that of a Pope, saying that such positions are not just jobs but callings that demand dedication and longevity.
“Being the Secretary General of COTU is not just a position — it’s a divine calling. It’s like a Catholic priest who rises to become the Pope in the Vatican.
The terms and conditions of service depend on that calling. As long as I still have the strength to serve and my fellow union members believe in my leadership, they will keep electing me. And I will continue to serve until they decide otherwise,” Atwoli explained.
He stressed that his vast experience and deep understanding of labour issues make him a vital voice in defending workers’ interests, and until the day his colleagues feel it’s time for a change, he will continue to serve them with dedication.
