Former NTV Journalist Silas Apollo Dies in Tragic Hit-and-Run Accident

Silas Apollo, a former journalist at NTV, has tragically died after being involved in a hit-and-run road accident in Nairobi.

His death has been confirmed by the police, who stated that the unfortunate incident took place on the evening of Thursday, April 10.

At the time of the accident, Apollo was working with the Nairobi Law Monthly. Reports indicate that he was struck by a fast-moving vehicle while attempting to cross the road. The driver, however, failed to stop or offer any assistance after hitting him.

There is still some confusion over the exact location of the crash, with reports suggesting two possible sites—Valley Road and Kiambu Road.

These conflicting details have raised questions about where the fatal impact actually occurred. Initially, the case was filed under “an unknown person hit by an unknown vehicle.”

Apollo was a proud alumnus of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST). His journalism career began at Nation Media Group, where he joined as an intern in the print department between May and August 2012.

After completing his internship, he returned to MMUST and continued sharpening his journalism skills by working as a news editor at MMUST FM, the university’s radio station.

He later rejoined Nation Media Group, first serving as a correspondent before earning a promotion to news reporter in 2017.

Apollo served in that position for five solid years, leaving the station in December 2022. During his time in the newsroom, he was known for his strong work ethic and exceptional storytelling skills.

Since the heartbreaking news of his death broke, many of his colleagues, friends, and former classmates have come forward with emotional tributes, remembering him as a passionate and courageous journalist who always gave his best.

“To work in the media, you need a strong heart, and Apollo helped me build that courage. I can’t believe he’s gone,” said one of his former colleagues in a moving tribute.

Another tribute read, “This is some of the most heartbreaking news I’ve heard. Rest easy, Champ.”

Apollo’s tragic death comes shortly after the media fraternity mourned another loss—that of former KTN journalist Nick Mudimba.

Mudimba passed away on Sunday evening, March 24, at his home in Syokimau, Machakos County, after a brief illness.

Reports say he had been dealing with a health issue related to high uric acid levels and had received treatment the day before his death.

These back-to-back losses have deeply shaken Kenya’s journalism community, as it comes to terms with the untimely deaths of two respected media personalities.
