Engine Malfunction Caused Chopper Crash That Killed Former CDF Ogolla – Investigation Reveals
An official investigation has confirmed that a technical fault in the engine was the reason behind the helicopter crash that tragically took the life of former Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Francis Ogolla.
The Ministry of Defence released a detailed report on Friday, April 11, outlining the findings of the probe. The investigation team carefully examined various factors that could have contributed to the crash in order to determine the exact cause of the accident.
As part of the investigation process, the team looked into whether the weather conditions or the helicopter’s weight could have played a role in the crash. However, these possibilities were eventually ruled out after thorough assessments.
The report stated that General Ogolla had been on an official visit to the North Rift counties of Baringo and West Pokot at the time of the crash. He was aboard a Huey helicopter, registered as KAF 1501, which was previously acquired from the United States.
The Ministry noted that this particular model, the Bell UH-1H-II (Huey), had demonstrated high reliability in the past. It had successfully completed numerous missions, both for operations and training purposes, including carrying out high-level VIP transport duties.
Despite the helicopter’s solid operational history, the report revealed that it experienced a complete power failure while in flight.
According to survivor accounts, the pilots attempted an emergency landing by guiding the aircraft to a clear area. Unfortunately, they lost full control of the helicopter before they could land safely.
“Based on all the facts, eyewitness testimonies, and technical evidence gathered during the investigation, the Board of Inquiry concluded that the crash of the Huey helicopter KAF 1501 was caused by a serious engine malfunction,” the report disclosed.
In response to the incident, the Kenya Air Force has taken measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The Ministry of Defence confirmed that new safety protocols have been introduced and the existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) have been thoroughly revised and updated.
The final report was formally presented to President William Ruto at State House on Friday afternoon. Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya and the current CDF, General Charles Kahariri, led the presentation.
Also present were Vice Chief of Defence Forces Lieutenant-General John Omenda and Kenya Air Force Commander Major-General Fatuma Ahmed.
