Governor Wamatangi Arrested After EACC Raid in Kiambu

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has been arrested and taken to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) offices in Nairobi, just hours after detectives raided both his home and county office.

The operation was part of an ongoing investigation into alleged misuse of public funds and conflict of interest in Kiambu County.

During the early morning raid, nine other top officials from the county government also had their homes and offices searched by the EACC.

The investigation is centered on the suspected embezzlement of large amounts of public money, raising further concerns about leadership and accountability in the county.

For weeks now, the EACC has been under growing pressure from members of the public and political leaders to take firm action against Kiambu’s leadership, especially over claims of financial mismanagement.

Governor Wamatangi was seen in the backseat of a black SUV, waving at curious onlookers as EACC officers escorted him away for questioning.

The dramatic arrest scene quickly drew attention from locals, with some staging protests outside his residence. The angry residents demanded his immediate and unconditional release.

During the protest, demonstrators loudly chanted songs criticizing President William Ruto. Many of them claimed the President was aware of the alleged plans to frustrate and bring down Governor Wamatangi’s leadership.

This marks the second major scandal involving a Kiambu governor. The county previously made headlines after former Governor Ferdinand Waititu was found guilty in a massive corruption case.

Waititu is currently serving a 12-year prison sentence handed down by Chief Magistrate Thomas Nzioki at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court. The charges involved a Ksh588 million graft case.

The latest arrest follows a public call made two months ago by Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa. In February, the senator urged the EACC to thoroughly probe the county’s financial systems.

He accused the governor of replacing the previous automated payment system with a manual one, which allegedly opened the door for ghost workers and unauthorized payments.

According to Senator Thang’wa, this switch in systems made it easier for money to be stolen without a trace. He claimed that a shocking Ksh390 million had already been lost under the new manual system.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission is expected to hold a press conference soon, where they will give a full account of the events that led to Governor Wamatangi’s arrest and offer more details on the ongoing investigation.
