The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather alert, warning residents in several regions across the country to prepare for moderate to heavy rainfall between Friday, April 18, and Tuesday, April 22.
The warning includes a wide range of areas expected to be affected by the changing weather patterns.
David Gikungu, the Director General of Kenya Met, released the official statement on Friday, April 18, saying that Kenyans living in different regions should get ready for heavy downpours that will likely start over the weekend and continue into next week.
According to the advisory, the rainfall will mainly affect the Highlands to the East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Southeastern Lowlands, parts of the Coast, as well as the Northwestern and Northeastern regions of the country.
Gikungu noted that Central Kenya residents, particularly those in Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi counties, will begin experiencing heavy rainfall from Friday afternoon.
He explained that mornings in these counties are expected to be mostly cloudy, and as the day progresses, heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms will develop.
Counties in the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley regions are also likely to receive heavy rains. These counties include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo-Marakwet.
Other parts of the Rift Valley such as Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot are also expected to be affected.
Residents of northern Kenya—specifically Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo—have also been warned to prepare for moderate to heavy showers, particularly starting Saturday afternoon.
Similar rainfall patterns are expected in the Southeastern Lowland counties of Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, including the inland parts of Tana River County.
In addition to the rainfall, the Met Department has also warned of a significant drop in night temperatures in several areas.
People living in Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi should be ready for extremely cold nights.
Gikungu said that these regions will likely record nighttime temperatures below 10°C during the five-day forecast period.
On the other hand, coastal and northeastern counties will experience a different kind of extreme weather. Areas such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo will face very high daytime temperatures.
The department forecasts daytime temperatures reaching up to 37°C in these counties for most of the forecast period.
In summary, the Kenya Met Department is urging all Kenyans, especially those in the affected regions, to take the necessary precautions and stay updated with daily weather forecasts, as the country faces a mix of heavy rains, cold nights, and extreme heat over the next few days.
