Kenyan Government Warns Public About Possible Falling Space Object During Easter

The Kenyan government, through the Kenya Space Agency (KSA), has issued a serious warning to the public about the possibility of a large space object re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere and potentially falling in the country during the Easter weekend.

In a statement released on Friday, April 18, the Agency said that the object is of major concern because its expected flight path includes the eastern African region. This makes Kenya a possible area of impact.

According to the Kenya Space Agency, the object could land anywhere from the North Eastern parts of Kenya, moving towards the South East and even possibly into Tanzania and further south.

While the exact location remains uncertain, Kenyans in the affected regions have been advised to remain cautious.

The re-entry is expected to happen between the morning of Saturday, April 19, at around 7:29 am, and the afternoon of Sunday, April 20, at approximately 3:01 pm.

The Agency warned that the object is quite large, and though its exact weight is still unknown, it could cause serious danger to lives and property along its path if it crashes to the ground.

“The Kenya Space Agency is currently working with international partners to gather more accurate data on the object’s path and timing,” KSA stated.

Even though there is no confirmed risk of the object falling directly in Kenya, the Agency emphasized that the warning is a precaution.

“Out of an abundance of caution, KSA advises all members of the public to be alert and report any sightings of strange objects falling or flying through the sky during the mentioned timeframe,” the statement read.

Kenyans have also been asked to immediately inform local security authorities, such as the nearest police station, a national government office, or a military base, in case they come across any fallen space debris. Quick reporting will help experts respond safely and investigate the materials.

This alert follows a similar event that occurred late last year, on December 30, 2024. At that time, a large piece of space debris, weighing approximately 500 kilograms, crashed into Makuku Village in Makueni County.

Residents described hearing a loud noise as the object descended from the sky, attracting a large crowd who gathered to observe the scene.

The ring-shaped object puzzled many locals who were concerned about its origin and the potential danger it posed.

Shortly after the incident, officers from the Kenya Space Agency and the National Police Service arrived at the scene, secured the area, and collected the object for further examination.

In a later press briefing, the Kenya Space Agency confirmed that the object was part of a space rocket, specifically a section that detaches during the rocket’s flight.

They explained that although most space debris burns up upon re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere, some larger parts can survive the descent and fall to the ground.

As such incidents may continue in the future, KSA reminded the public of the importance of staying informed and alert to avoid harm from unexpected space objects.
