In a shocking incident, police have discovered two dead bodies and rescued 57 people from St Joseph Mission of Africa Church, located in Kochola Village, Migori County.
According to a report filed by officers from Kamagambo Police Station, the operation took place on Sunday, April 20, after the security and intelligence team from Rongo Sub-county received a report and began investigating the premises.
One body was discovered inside a prayer room at the church. It was wrapped in a white robe and covered with a grey sheet.
The body showed visible signs of injuries on the face, and there was foam coming out of the mouth.
Police said the condition of the body suggested possible foul play. Later that day, a second body was also found elsewhere within the church compound.
Authorities processed the scene for evidence and then moved both bodies to Rosewood Mortuary. The police report noted, “The scene was processed, and necessary action was taken.
The body was removed to Rosewood Mortuary pending a postmortem.”
As the search of the premises continued, officers were shocked to find 57 individuals living within the church compound. These people, ranging in age from 5 to 77 years, appeared weak, frail, and possibly malnourished, raising serious concerns about their wellbeing.
The rescued individuals were immediately taken to Rongo Sub-county Hospital for medical care.
However, according to police, they resisted treatment and instead began singing religious songs loudly inside the hospital. Their behavior reportedly disturbed other patients at the facility.
Due to the disruption, medical staff advised police to remove the group from the hospital. They were then taken to Kamagambo Police Station, where they are being held as authorities determine the next steps.
The police operation was triggered by a tip-off from the Assistant Chief of Kanyadiedo Sub-location, who raised concerns about strange activities taking place at the church.
This disturbing event brings back memories of the Shakahola tragedy of 2023, where severely malnourished children were discovered at a religious site.
That case later led to the uncovering of shallow graves and many survivors in desperate conditions.
Just recently, on Friday, April 11, the Court of Appeal in Malindi gave the go-ahead for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to pursue 191 charges against preacher Paul Mackenzie and 30 others involved in the Shakahola incident. The charges relate to various crimes committed during that tragedy.
The similarities between the two cases have raised alarm, and authorities are continuing investigations into the situation at the St Joseph Mission of Africa Church to uncover the full truth.
