How Kenyans Can Audition for ‘Echoes of War’ Stage Play
Kenyan playwright Cleophas Malala has officially opened up auditions for his much-talked-about stage play, Echoes of War, inviting talented Kenyans to take part in the upcoming production.
The audition announcement follows recent controversy surrounding the play, which was originally meant to be performed by students at Butere Girls High School.
However, it was met with backlash from certain leaders who felt that the storyline touched on politically sensitive issues.
In a public statement, Malala revealed that the auditions would run from April 22 to May 5. He encouraged all aspiring actors to take advantage of the opportunity.
“If you are passionate about acting, enjoy the theatre, and believe you can truly bring a character to life, this is your time to shine,” he said in part of the statement.
To audition, interested Kenyans must follow a simple but creative process. First, they should visit Cleophas Malala’s TikTok page, read through the play’s script, and pick a character they feel they can best portray. Then, they are required to record a 30-second video of themselves performing the role.
After recording, participants must post the video on both TikTok and Instagram, tag Cleophas Malala, and wait for the shortlist of successful candidates who will be invited for the physical auditions.
Malala emphasized that the final production will feature the best adult actors from across the country. These actors will later present the play to a large public audience in a special showcase event.
The audition call also sparked reactions from notable figures, including Kiambu County Senator Karungo wa Thiong’o, who expressed a desire to audition.
He mentioned that he might try out for a role, reminiscing about his love for acting back in his school days.
“I’m thinking about auditioning for a role—maybe as the Sultan? I want to rekindle my high school acting days!” the senator wrote with excitement.
Echoes of War centers around a powerful leadership theme that initially led to its ban due to concerns about its political undertones.
The story is set in a fictional empire called the Royal Velvet Emirates and follows a young, intelligent character named Mustafa, who uses modern technology to challenge the strict traditional leadership of the Sultan.
As the conflict between old and new generations escalates, the play explores whether the community can find common ground before their world falls apart.
The production boldly mirrors the generational and political struggles seen in Kenya today—especially between youth and national leaders—which is what sparked the earlier criticism and attempt to block the play.
Despite the initial controversy, Echoes of War is now gaining nationwide attention, with many eagerly looking forward to seeing which talents will be chosen to bring this thought-provoking story to life on stage.
