A tragic road accident on Friday, April 25, claimed the lives of two people and left several others injured along the Siaya-Kisumu highway, near Ng’iya Center.
The deadly crash involved a truck owned by the Kenyan Urban People Association (KUPA), which was transporting coffins, and a public service vehicle (PSV) matatu.
The force of the collision caused significant damage, especially to the back end of the matatu, as shown in photos and videos shared by Newshub.co.ke.
The wreckage revealed just how serious the impact was, with multiple passengers sustaining serious injuries.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and rushed the injured individuals to the Siaya Teaching and Referral Hospital for medical attention.
Sadly, the accident is one of several fatal crashes that have occurred in Kenya in recent days.
Just a few days earlier, on April 19, another horrific crash took place along Thika Road near Membley in Ruiru.
In that incident, which occurred in the early morning hours, a private saloon car rammed into a stalled trailer near the Kenyatta University Referral Hospital.
Four people died in that crash, while others were left with severe injuries. Investigations later revealed that the driver of the car had been speeding and was unable to react in time due to poor visibility and the trailer being parked without any warning signs.
These back-to-back fatal accidents have reignited growing concerns about road safety in the country.
In response, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has initiated a nationwide crackdown targeting drivers and vehicles that fail to comply with traffic rules.
NTSA Chairman Khatib Mwashetani announced that enforcement officers are now actively pursuing offenders, particularly those who drive under the influence, operate vehicles without speed governors, or fail to meet safety standards.
Officials are urging motorists across the country to drive responsibly. Drivers are being reminded to observe speed limits, avoid alcohol before and during driving, and ensure that any stalled vehicle is clearly marked to prevent further crashes.
In addition, they are being encouraged to get enough rest before embarking on long trips, remain alert while on the road, and conduct proper vehicle maintenance checks before travelling.
These recent tragedies underscore the urgent need for tougher enforcement of road safety laws, improved driver behavior, and greater public education.
It is becoming increasingly clear that stronger measures must be taken to make Kenya’s roads safer and reduce the number of lives lost in preventable accidents.
