Kariobangi North Member of County Assembly (MCA) Joel Munuve passed away on Tuesday, April 22, while receiving treatment at a private hospital along Kiambu Road.
According to government pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor, the cause of death was identified as a blood clot and a lack of sufficient oxygen in his system.
Munuve had collapsed earlier that day while working at his ward office in Nairobi. He was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately did not survive.
His death came as a shock to many, and it sparked widespread speculation and public interest—especially since it occurred just three days after he publicly declared his intention to launch a signature collection campaign to impeach Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.
Political Backdrop and Public Suspicion
The timing of Munuve’s death stirred controversy, with some linking it to his recent political activities.
As an independent candidate in an area where party politics dominate, Munuve had made a name for himself as a vocal and fearless watchdog, often challenging what he saw as misconduct or inefficiency in Nairobi County leadership.
Family lawyer Danstan Omari confirmed that the unusual circumstances surrounding the MCA’s death prompted the involvement of multiple experts.
A total of seven pathologists and over 15 forensic officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) were brought on board to participate in the postmortem process.
The aim was to ensure transparency and address the growing concerns among the public and Munuve’s supporters.
Dr. Johansen Oduor, the Chief Government Pathologist, was appointed to lead the team, which included representatives from the Nairobi County Government, the hospital where Munuve died, the Nairobi County Assembly, and even Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.
Postmortem Delayed as More Experts Join
The postmortem, initially scheduled for Thursday, April 24, was unexpectedly postponed to allow more parties—particularly detectives from the DCI and additional pathologists—to take part in the process.
This delay only fueled more speculation, as many demanded a thorough investigation into the MCA’s death.
Governor Sakaja Calls for Calm Amid Investigations
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV on April 24, Governor Johnson Sakaja urged the public and political leaders not to politicize Munuve’s passing.
He acknowledged Munuve as a dedicated and principled leader, stating that while they had their differences, it was important to focus on the truth rather than political narratives.
“Death is a very serious matter. It’s not something to use for political mileage or assumptions. Joel was passionate about the issues he raised, and we should respect that by allowing full investigations to take place,” Sakaja said during the live interview.
Munuve’s Recent Political Stances
In the weeks leading up to his death, Munuve had been active in challenging various county initiatives.
He had raised concerns over the “Dishi na County” school feeding program and demanded a statement regarding its implementation and management.
He also pushed for the national government to take back control of the Mama Margaret Kenyatta Hospital, proposing that it be run as a satellite facility under the Kenyatta National Hospital to improve its services.
Munuve had even written formal letters to President William Ruto, Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, and Governor Sakaja, complaining about the poor state of services at the hospital and calling for urgent reforms.
As investigations continue, many are waiting for conclusive answers about what truly led to the untimely death of a man seen by many as a brave voice in local governance.
