Tensions Rise in Narok as Five Protestors Shot Dead Over Land Dispute
A deadly confrontation erupted on Monday afternoon in the Angata Barikoi area of Kilgoris, Narok County, leading to the death of five people.
According to early reports, the victims were allegedly protesting over a fierce land dispute involving a vast 6,300-acre piece of land.
Witness accounts reveal that the protestors were demonstrating against what they claim was an illegal attempt to seize their ancestral land.
Sources further allege that the land in question is linked to a powerful politician from the region, although independent verification of these claims has not been made.
Footage and images shared with Newshub.co.ke captured the terrifying moments when gunshots rang out, sending crowds of residents, including women and children, fleeing for safety.
Cries and shouts filled the air as some residents accused General Service Unit (GSU) officers of opening fire on unarmed civilians.
Narok Senator Ledama Olekina confirmed the tragic incident, expressing deep sorrow over the killings.
He vowed to travel to Angata Barikoi as soon as possible to gather firsthand information and stand with the affected families.
“I am deeply saddened by the heartbreaking news coming from Angata Barikoi. My heartfelt condolences to all families and individuals affected by this tragedy.
I want to assure the community that no one has the right to take your land from you,” Senator Olekina declared.
He further stated, “As your Senator, I am fully committed to standing with you during these difficult times.
I will personally visit the area to better understand the situation and to offer my full support. Once again, my sincere condolences to everyone mourning the loss of their loved ones.”
Tensions in Angata Barikoi have been simmering for some time. Earlier in March this year, residents held demonstrations over fears that their land would be forcefully taken by the same influential leader accused in the latest incident.
However, by the time of publishing, Newshub.co.ke had not been able to independently confirm who the rightful owner of the disputed land is.
Moreover, authorities, including the police and local administration officials, had not yet issued any official statement explaining the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting of the five protestors.
