Nakuru Residents Demand Resignation of Top Health Officials After Tragic Deaths at Level 5 Hospital
A growing outcry has emerged from Nakuru County as residents call for the resignation of two senior health officials following the tragic deaths of a mother and her newborn at Nakuru Level 5 Hospital.
The officials under fire are the County Executive Committee Member (CEC) for Health and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the hospital.
On Monday, April 28, Nakuru resident Evans Kimori released a strongly-worded statement, urging the two officials to step down to allow an independent and transparent investigation into the troubling incidents.
Kimori emphasized that the resignations are necessary to restore public trust and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
He pointed out that the Nakuru County government, under the leadership of Governor Susan Kihika, has a duty to act swiftly and decisively. “Recently, a woman sadly lost her life after undergoing delivery at Nakuru Level 5 Hospital.
In another heartbreaking case, a baby named Mercy mysteriously disappeared from the same facility, leaving a grieving family with no answers.
No mother or child should ever face such horror in a public institution that is supposed to protect life,” Kimori’s statement read.
He went on to express the deep concern felt by the people of Nakuru, especially men and youth who constantly worry for the safety of their mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters whenever they seek medical care at public hospitals.
“What should be moments of joy—bringing new life into the world—have now become moments of fear and uncertainty,” he added.
Kimori has further appealed to the Nakuru County Assembly and the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) to form special investigative teams to thoroughly probe the operations of Nakuru Level 5 Hospital, which he described as a “national shame.”
According to him, an external investigation is vital to uncover any systemic failures and prevent future tragedies.
He also called on the county government to release a detailed and transparent report outlining the steps taken so far in addressing the two incidents.
Residents feel that honest communication is essential to rebuild the broken trust between the public and healthcare providers.
Moreover, the residents are demanding the full reinstatement and strengthening of the Linda Mama programme within Nakuru County.
They believe that offering free, quality maternal healthcare is a critical step in ensuring the safety and dignity of mothers and their children.
“The county government must publicly assure all women in Nakuru that they can access safe and respectful maternal healthcare without fear,” the statement emphasized.
In addition to local demands, the petitioners have called on the national government to immediately boost the Linda Mama programme nationwide.
They insist that no woman or child should ever be abandoned by a healthcare system meant to protect and nurture them.
“Enough is enough. Our women deserve better. Our children deserve better,” the statement concluded.
These demands come just days after the shocking death of a mother at Nakuru Level 5 Hospital on Saturday, April 19.
Reports indicate that she had successfully delivered via caesarean section but later developed severe breathing problems, which ultimately led to her passing, according to a post-mortem report.
