After returning to the country a fortnight ago, former Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang’i, is set to make his first public appearance this Friday, May 2, 2025.
This marks a significant step in his public re-engagement as he prepares for a potential presidential run in 2027.
First Appearance in Gusii Region
In an official statement, Matiang’i shared that his first public appearance will take place in the Gusii region, a move that highlights his growing political presence.
During the event, he will be joined by a number of elected leaders from the area, including Kisii Governor Simba Arati.
The statement read: “Dr. Fred Matiang’i is pleased to inform the public that he will make his first public appearance this year in the Gusii region on Friday, May 2, 2025.”
He will be accompanied by prominent local leaders, including Governor Simba Arati of Kisii, Governor Amos Nyaribo of Nyamira, Senators Momoima Onyonka and Okong’o Omogeni, as well as various Members of Parliament and Members of County Assemblies.
The event is expected to feature several engagements, where Matiang’i will meet the people and conduct official tours alongside the respective Governors of Kisii and Nyamira counties.
Speculation Around Matiang’i’s 2027 Presidential Bid
This public appearance is especially significant given the ongoing speculation about Matiang’i’s presidential ambitions for the 2027 general elections.
Several political figures and parties have already thrown their support behind his potential candidacy, further fueling public interest in his political future.
Though Matiang’i has not yet officially declared his intention to run for president, the Jubilee Party, under the leadership of Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni, has publicly endorsed him as their preferred presidential candidate for the upcoming election. This has further sparked conversations around his potential role in the political landscape.
Matiang’i’s Political Movements
Since returning to Kenya on Thursday, April 17, Matiang’i has been actively engaging with various political leaders.
Upon his arrival, he was warmly welcomed by key figures, including Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka and nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba, both of whom are enthusiastic supporters of his potential candidacy.
In addition, Matiang’i has started holding strategic meetings with leaders who oppose the Kenya Kwanza government.
This includes high-level discussions with prominent opposition figures such as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua from the PLP, Eugene Wamalwa of DAP-K, Mukhisa Kituyi, and former Cabinet Secretaries Mithika Linturi and Justin Muturi.
These meetings are part of broader efforts by the opposition to strengthen their political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
Addressing Allegations of Avoiding Public Engagements
Matiang’i’s upcoming appearance will also serve to address allegations that he has preferred private meetings over engaging in public events.
His critics have previously claimed that he has been avoiding public appearances, but his first major appearance since his return from the United States is set to dispel these claims and reaffirm his commitment to active involvement in national politics.
This public appearance on May 2 is expected to provide more clarity about Matiang’i’s role in the political scene, particularly as the 2027 elections approach and political dynamics continue to shift.
