In Eldoret’s Kipkaren area, tensions escalated as residents took to the streets to protest alleged police brutality following the discovery of a protester’s body in River Sosiani.
The demonstrations, initially peaceful, turned chaotic as protesters clashed with police forces.
Amid the turmoil, a young girl made a daring escape, weaving through the crowd and disappearing swiftly, prompting an officer to exclaim in astonishment, “Huyu si mtu,” a Swahili phrase expressing disbelief at her agility.
The protests were sparked by the mysterious death of a local protester and the disappearance of another, fueling public outrage and demands for accountability.
Human rights organizations, including the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), have condemned the excessive use of force by police during these demonstrations.
KNCHR reported instances of police officers using tear gas and making arbitrary arrests, with several injuries recorded among protesters .
International bodies have also weighed in. Human Rights Watch documented cases where Kenyan security forces allegedly shot directly into crowds of protesters, including those attempting to flee, resulting in multiple fatalities .
Similarly, ARTICLE 19 Eastern Africa called for the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to take action against officers who used excessive force during the protests .
In response to the unrest, President William Ruto acknowledged instances of excessive and extrajudicial actions by security services, emphasizing the need for accountability .
Local human rights activists, such as Kipkorir Ngetich, have urged for unity and constructive dialogue between the government and civil society to address the underlying issues fueling the protests .
As Eldoret grapples with the aftermath of these events, the community continues to call for justice, transparency, and respect for human rights.
