Governor Fires Speechwriter Publicly After Embarrassing Slip-Up During Madaraka Day Speech
Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika made headlines on Madaraka Day, Sunday, June 1, after she dramatically fired her speechwriter in public due to a mistake in her speech.
While giving her official speech during the celebrations, Kihika was listing various development projects underway in Nakuru County.
However, a humorous moment occurred when she accidentally mentioned “Wamunyoro” instead of “Wanyororo” Vocational Training Centre in Kabatini.
The name “Wamunyoro” is famously associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s home in Nyeri County, where he frequently holds political meetings.
Realizing the blunder, Kihika immediately corrected herself and used the opportunity to publicly dismiss her speechwriter.
“Construction of two lecture rooms at Wamunyoro – no, sorry, Wanyororo – vocational centre in Kabatini. And by the way, my writer of this speech is fired,” she told the amused audience, triggering laughter from the crowd.
After the incident, Governor Kihika continued with her speech and expressed her unwavering loyalty to President William Ruto.
“Don’t worry. I will always be at Ruto’s side,” she assured the cheering crowd, reaffirming her commitment to the president’s leadership and political direction.
Kihika has never held back when it comes to criticizing former DP Rigathi Gachagua. She has been outspoken in rejecting his political views and has consistently distanced herself from his agenda.
Her opposition has been especially notable since Gachagua began making more controversial statements following his impeachment in October 2024.
Just last month, Governor Kihika harshly criticized Gachagua for making what she called “reckless and dangerous” remarks.
He had warned that if the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) failed to conduct fair elections, the country could witness violence worse than what happened during the 2007/2008 post-election chaos.
“This kind of talk is completely irresponsible,” Kihika said. “Coming from a region that suffered deeply during the 2007/2008 violence, I find it totally unacceptable. Gachagua must stop treating his personal political issues as if they’re national disasters.”
She added with emphasis, “There comes a time when a country must rise above individual interests. Gachagua, that time is now. Kenya cannot afford to bleed again—not for any politician or personal agenda.”
Her remarks were supported by Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi, who also urged political leaders to stop using inflammatory language that could incite the public.
Amisi stated, “We must remember the past and avoid heading down that same road again. Leaders should focus on unity and development, not inciting tensions.”
Governor Kihika’s bold stance and public actions have once again placed her at the center of Kenya’s political spotlight, showing her readiness to take decisive actions—even in the middle of a national celebration.
