Gachagua’s Bold Plan to Oust Ruto
The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), linked to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has kicked off an ambitious countrywide mobilisation campaign following the failed launch of the party at Kasarani Sports Centre.
The botched event seems to have only fueled the party’s determination, with Gachagua’s team now rolling out a fresh and vigorous strategy to strengthen their influence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a detailed statement issued after its first National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the party’s headquarters, the DCP outlined a robust grassroots campaign aimed at establishing a powerful presence across all regions in Kenya.
The meeting, which came after the failed official launch on May 17, 2025, marked the beginning of what the party describes as a focused plan to connect with citizens from the ground up.
The party had initially planned to launch at Kasarani, but the event was abruptly cancelled after the venue management allegedly withdrew the reservation without warning. This disruption forced the NEC to shift its focus, meeting instead to chart a new course for the party’s growth.
In response to the setback, the DCP leadership directed its Secretary General, Cleophas Malala, to urgently find a new private venue where the party can hold its delayed official launch. According to the NEC, the new venue must be confirmed before the end of June 2025.
Once this is done, the party will communicate the new launch date to its members and supporters. “NEC has instructed the Secretary General to locate an appropriate private venue for the party’s national launch within June 2025. After confirmation, the new date and location will be shared widely,” read the statement.
Meanwhile, DCP has rolled out a serious mobilisation plan to expand its reach at the grassroots level. This includes the immediate recruitment of interim county coordinators who will be responsible for setting up party offices in all counties and constituencies.
These structures are expected to serve as the foundation of the party’s operations and voter engagement initiatives across the country.
The party emphasized the importance of having authorised offices and made it clear that any office not officially approved by the national leadership will be considered illegal. This move is seen as a way to prevent disorganisation and ensure that all party activities remain under strict central coordination.
DCP is also encouraging Kenyans interested in contesting for elective seats under the party’s banner to reach out to the party headquarters and express their interest early. This is part of a broader strategy to build a strong line-up of candidates who align with the party’s vision.
Additionally, DCP revealed plans to organise forums for aspirants in all 47 counties. These forums, to be overseen by newly appointed county officials, are expected to become key platforms for political dialogue, strategic planning, and preparation for the upcoming elections.
With just under two years left until the next polls, Gachagua’s team appears to be setting the stage for a serious challenge against President William Ruto and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA). The DCP’s outreach seems designed to penetrate UDA strongholds—many of which Gachagua himself helped secure in the last election, before his political fallout with the president.
This strategic expansion and mobilisation effort suggest that Gachagua is not just forming a new party—he’s laying the groundwork for a potential showdown with the president, with a focus on rallying discontented voters and former allies to his side.
