Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has introduced a new set of modern waste bins across the city’s central business district (CBD) as part of ongoing efforts to improve cleanliness, public hygiene, and urban order.
The new bins, known as Glasdon Jubilee 110-litre litter bins, are crafted from Durapol, a tough, long-lasting material that is both heat-resistant and tamper-proof.
This marks a significant improvement from the smaller and less secure bins that had been installed a few months ago but were later removed due to capacity and durability concerns.
The rollout of these upgraded bins officially began on Sunday, May 18, and was overseen by Nairobi County Chief Environment Officer Geoffrey Mosiria. The initiative aims to provide a better waste disposal solution for city pedestrians and encourage responsible trash management in public areas.
On Friday, June 6, 2025, the Nairobi City Hall team continued with installations in key parts of the city. These new bins come with several enhanced features designed to withstand Nairobi’s busy and often harsh urban conditions.
Each bin includes:
- A domed top to prevent rainwater from pooling inside,
- A three-point locking mechanism to prevent unauthorised access or tampering,
- An anti-posting exterior finish to curb illegal advertisements, stickers, and posters, which are commonly pasted on public infrastructure,
- Corrosion-resistant internal liners, and in some cases, lightweight polyethylene construction to ensure longevity and reduce maintenance needs.
The first set of these bins has already been placed in high-traffic zones within the CBD. However, the county government plans to expand the rollout to cover additional areas such as residential neighbourhoods, public parks, and transport terminals in the coming weeks.
While inspecting the new bins on June 6, Governor Sakaja highlighted that the initiative goes beyond just waste management—it represents a broader vision for a cleaner and more organised Nairobi.
“These are not just waste bins,” the governor remarked. “They are a clear message about the kind of city we are building—one that respects cleanliness, values order, and embraces modern solutions.”
He further emphasized that while the county is investing in modern infrastructure, the success of such programmes depends on residents playing their part.
“We’re putting in place the right systems, but true transformation will only happen when wananchi also commit to proper waste disposal,” Sakaja added.
The bin installation is part of Nairobi County’s wider environmental and urban renewal programme, which includes waste collection upgrades, street cleaning improvements, and enhanced enforcement against littering and environmental offences.
Residents and business owners are being urged to support the initiative by using the new bins correctly, avoiding littering, and reporting any vandalism or misuse of public facilities.
