Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has given new instructions to county and regional officers in areas affected by banditry, following the successful rescue of a Grade 7 girl who was kidnapped a few days ago.
In a statement made on Sunday, June 8, Murkomen confirmed that the missing girl had been found alive and was being taken back to her family. Her rescue came two days after she was abducted from her home.
“I am happy to share that the young girl who was kidnapped in Yatya, Baringo North Sub-County three days ago has been found safe. She is now on her way to reunite with her loved ones,” the CS stated.
As part of efforts to reduce rising tension between rival communities in the region, Murkomen has instructed local leaders and security officials to organize peace talks.
These discussions will involve residents from both Baringo North and Tiaty Central and aim to identify and resolve the causes of continued insecurity and violence.
The Cabinet Secretary also announced that the rescued girl would receive psychosocial support to help her recover from the emotional trauma she experienced.
He further offered to enroll the girl and her brother, who had managed to escape during the abduction, in a boarding school far from their home area to help them feel secure as they continue with their education.
“Given the emotional distress both the girl and her brother went through, the government has arranged for them to receive counselling and mental health support.
We have also offered, if the family agrees, to transfer them to a boarding school in a safer location outside their home sub-county, where they can focus on their studies in peace,” Murkomen’s statement added.
The young girl was taken on Friday afternoon, June 6, while at home in Baringo North. She was with her younger brother, a Grade 5 pupil, and a three-year-old child when two armed men reportedly approached them as they were preparing for a meal.
The kidnappers forced the two older children to go with them, but the boy managed to escape.
Later that same day, residents reported seeing the abductors with the girl in Riong’o, Tiaty East, approximately 50 kilometers from where the children had been taken.
Murkomen praised the rapid and well-coordinated response by security forces at all levels — national, regional, and local — which made the rescue possible. He also singled out the Naudo Location Chief for playing a vital role in the successful mission.
According to the CS, the chief was instrumental in rallying elders and security personnel, including the National Police Reservists (NPRs), to track down and rescue the girl.
The government is now intensifying efforts to pursue those responsible for the kidnapping. Murkomen confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that the culprits will be brought to justice.
“This operation shows what can be achieved when communities, local leaders, and security agencies work together. We will not rest until those behind this act are arrested and punished,” Murkomen assured.
The government continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of children and residents living in bandit-prone areas and vows to strengthen security operations to prevent such incidents in the future.
