Chaos Erupts in Machakos County Assembly as MCAs Fight Over Leadership Changes

Drama unfolded at the Machakos County Assembly after Members of County Assembly (MCAs) engaged in a violent confrontation over controversial leadership changes.

The chaotic session saw lawmakers exchanging kicks and blows as tempers flared over the contested restructuring of key positions, particularly on the minority side.

According to reports, the tension began when the Speaker of the County Assembly informed the House about new changes in minority leadership. The Speaker cited communication from the Wiper Party, which had reportedly recommended the reshuffling.

However, this announcement immediately sparked outrage among several MCAs who strongly opposed the proposed changes.

The situation quickly turned ugly as some members began protesting against the move to install Mathani MCA Francis Kavyu as the new Minority Leader.

The protesting MCAs argued that Kavyu should not lead the minority side, claiming he was actually aligned with the Majority side, making his appointment unacceptable and unconstitutional.

Chaos erupted inside the chamber, with MCAs from both political camps throwing punches and kicks at one another. Videos and images seen by Newshub.co.ke captured the dramatic scenes, including some lawmakers storming toward the Speaker’s seat in a show of aggression and protest.

The violent scuffle brought the session to a complete standstill. Assembly security officers, including the sergeant-at-arms, found it difficult to maintain order as the brawl intensified.

In the middle of the chaos, the ceremonial mace, which symbolizes the authority of the assembly, became a target. As one sergeant-at-arms tried to secure it, several MCAs gave chase, demanding that it be returned so that the House could proceed.

Despite efforts to restore calm, the situation remained tense, and the sitting could not resume. Reports also indicate that some MCAs sustained injuries during the melee, although the exact number of those hurt was not immediately confirmed.

At the heart of the conflict is the Wiper Democratic Movement’s move to strip Katangi Ward MCA Felix Ngui and Matuu Ward MCA Mbili Ndawa, affiliated with the Maendeleo Chap Chap party, of their leadership roles within the assembly.

Additionally, the Wiper Party Secretariat recommended that Felix Ngui be removed from the County Assembly Service Board (CASB). They proposed that Deputy Majority Whip Winnifred Mutua take his place on the board.

This is not the first time such scenes have played out in the Machakos County Assembly. It marks the second major outbreak of violence in recent weeks. On April 8, another session was disrupted when MCAs allied to Assembly Speaker Anne Kiusya clashed with those pushing for her removal.

That incident came amid speculation about a looming attempt to impeach Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti.

Tensions in the Assembly escalated further when Deputy Speaker Stephen Mwanthi accused Speaker Kiusya of mismanaging public funds and failing to provide proper accountability. These accusations have deepened divisions within the county’s political leadership and contributed to the growing unrest.

As the Assembly remains divided, the ongoing power struggles and factional battles continue to threaten the smooth operation of legislative functions in Machakos County.
