Alarm Over Criminals Posing as Government Officials to Rob Homes
The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) has addressed growing concerns over a group of people reportedly going door to door under false pretenses, pretending to verify identification documents ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
KNBS has firmly denied any connection to these individuals, clarifying that they are not part of any government initiative and are falsely presenting themselves as official enumerators.
In a public statement, KNBS described the circulating claims on social media as false, misleading, and meant to discredit a legitimate national survey currently underway.
The bureau emphasized that these online messages were crafted with the intent to spread fear and undermine public trust in the official data collection process.
The agency reassured Kenyans that all its enumerators involved in the ongoing survey carry proper identification cards. These ID cards contain full details that prove their authenticity and association with KNBS.
Currently, KNBS is conducting the 2025 Remittances Household Survey (2025 RHS), which is a critical nationwide statistical survey. This survey is being carried out on behalf of the government and other key institutions to gather essential data.
According to KNBS, the 2025 RHS aims to collect both qualitative and quantitative information on how households interact with remittances — money sent and received.
The main focus is on households that receive financial support from family members, relatives, and friends living abroad. It also includes those sending money to loved ones in other countries.
In addition, the survey seeks to understand remittances received from international organizations operating in Kenya or globally, such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Food Programme (WFP), UNICEF, and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), among others.
This data collection is taking place in all 47 counties. The first phase, which involves listing the households that will participate in the survey, officially started on June 3, 2025, and will continue for 30 days.
In contrast, the fraudulent message being circulated claims that a group of individuals is visiting homes pretending to be from the Department of Home Affairs.
These individuals allegedly carry documents with official-looking letterheads and claim they are verifying that everyone has a valid ID in preparation for the 2027 elections.
The message warns residents that these people are in fact robbers and that the initiative they claim to represent does not exist. It further urges people to stay alert and to share the warning with others through neighborhood group chats and other community communication channels.
KNBS has advised members of the public to remain vigilant and not to open their doors to anyone without proper identification.
They have also encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activity to official government agencies involved in the legitimate survey, such as the Central Bank of Kenya and the Ministry of Interior.
The agency reminded the public that genuine data collectors will never demand to inspect personal documents like national IDs without proper authorization and that their role is strictly limited to gathering data for the specified survey.
By clearing up the misinformation, KNBS hopes to protect Kenyans from falling victim to criminal activities and ensure that their important national survey proceeds without further interference.
