Kenyans have come out in large numbers to support the family of late blogger Albert Ojwang, whose sudden death while in police custody at Nairobi’s Central Police Station on Sunday, June 8, has shocked the nation.
The incident, which occurred under unclear circumstances, has raised serious questions and drawn widespread attention, especially towards the conduct of the police involved.
The level of public support has been so overwhelming that the M-Pesa account belonging to Ojwang’s father reached its maximum transaction limit just three hours after it was shared online.
This response has demonstrated the deep sympathy Kenyans feel for the family and the demand for justice.
Popular comedian and activist Eric Omondi played a major role in rallying support. On Wednesday, June 11, he revealed that only 11 minutes after he posted Ojwang’s father’s phone number on social media, donations had already begun to flow in at a rapid pace.
“First and foremost, I want to sincerely thank Kenyans for the love and support they’ve shown Albert’s family. Just 11 minutes after I shared that video, his father’s M-Pesa account was overwhelmed. May God bless everyone who has contributed,” Omondi shared emotionally.
He went on to explain that the volume of donations was so high that the M-Pesa wallet reached its full capacity of Ksh 500,000 within three hours.
This is the maximum amount allowed to be held in a personal M-Pesa account at any one time. Additionally, the limit for a single transaction is Ksh 250,000, which further limited how much well-wishers could send in one go.
As the contributions kept coming in, many Kenyans began sharing screenshots of their successful transactions on social media, accompanied by messages of unity and condolence.
However, some users reported being unable to send money because the account had already reached its limit, showing just how strong the wave of support had become.
Eric Omondi urged the public to continue standing with Ojwang’s family during this difficult time. He reminded everyone that Albert Ojwang left behind a young son, just three years old, and that it was now up to Kenyans to ensure the child grows up well cared for. “Let’s help Albert’s son grow up knowing that his father was a hero.
He should never lack anything. Please send whatever amount you can to Albert’s father’s number,” he pleaded.
To ensure donations could continue smoothly, Omondi provided an alternative phone number to receive funds and also advised Kenyans to consider using Pochi La Biashara, a Safaricom service that allows business owners to receive payments without being limited by personal M-Pesa wallet caps. This method would allow for the continued flow of funds without interruption.
Albert Ojwang’s death has united Kenyans in grief and action, and the massive outpouring of support for his family shows just how powerful collective compassion can be.
The country continues to wait for a clear explanation of what led to his untimely death, as demands for transparency and justice grow louder.
