Huge Win for Uhuru After Major Court Ruling Validates His Leadership of Jubilee Party
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has secured a major legal victory following a decisive court ruling that officially ended a long-standing leadership dispute within the Jubilee Party.
On Thursday, June 12, the High Court ruled in favour of Kenyatta’s faction, confirming the decisions made during the party’s National Delegates Conference (NDC) held in May 2023.
This ruling means Kenyatta has been reinstated as the party’s leader, marking a significant moment in Kenya’s political landscape.
The court’s decision validated the NDC resolutions, giving Uhuru the legal backing to lead the party and make key leadership changes. The court found that the meeting was properly convened and had the necessary authority.
In March 2025, former Jubilee Party Chairman Nelson Dzuya had already supported the legitimacy of the NDC, stating that although there might have been some procedural issues, the conference was within the powers of the party’s leadership, and Uhuru Kenyatta was rightfully in charge of it.
As a result of this landmark ruling, several leadership changes at the top of the party have now been confirmed. Saitoti Torome has officially been appointed as the new National Chairman of Jubilee, while Jeremiah Kioni has retained his position as the party’s Secretary-General.
This outcome solidifies the control of Kenyatta’s camp over the party and reaffirms their authority to run its affairs.
The legal battle was led by lawyer Jackson Awele, who filed the application on behalf of Uhuru’s faction. The legal team was also supported by the party’s Internal Dispute Resolution Committee (IDRC), which played a key role in backing Kenyatta’s leadership during the internal conflict.
Importantly, the High Court ruling also dealt a blow to the rival faction led by former Kieni MP Kanini Kega and nominated MP Sabina Chege. The court nullified all the decisions and leadership changes made by this opposing group, effectively removing their claim to power within Jubilee.
This means that any actions taken by the Kanini-Sabina-led National Executive Council (NEC), including attempts to expel Kenyatta’s key allies, are now void.
The conflict had started when the Kanini-Sabina team claimed that they had followed the party’s internal processes to remove Kenyatta and his allies, including Jeremiah Kioni, Vice Chairperson David Murathe, and Treasurer Kagwe Gichohi. However, the court has now ruled that their claims had no legal standing.
Notably, a previous court ruling made on September 30, 2024, had temporarily given control of the party to the Kega-Chege faction and refused to recognise Kenyatta’s side. That decision has now been overturned, restoring full authority to the former president and his allies.
In a strong statement issued back in September 2024, the Jubilee Party had declared, “Victory as the High Court rules that the Jubilee Party belongs to Uhuru Kenyatta.
Justice Janet Mulwa also nullified the Kanini-Sabina-led NEC that purported to remove Jeremiah Kioni, David Murathe, and Treasurer Kagwe Gichohi.”
The latest court decision also confirmed that David Murathe will continue to serve legally as the party’s Vice Chairperson, despite attempts by the rival faction to expel him.
This ruling is seen as a major turning point for Uhuru Kenyatta, who has mostly kept a low profile since leaving office in 2022.
His reinstatement as the official party leader gives him a fresh opportunity to influence political developments in the country. It also raises questions about whether this could be the beginning of a political comeback for the former head of state.
With the leadership dispute now legally settled, all eyes will be on how Uhuru Kenyatta and his team will steer the future of the Jubilee Party. Whether he plans to play a more active political role or focus on party-building efforts remains to be seen—but for now, it’s clear that he’s back in charge.
