Fuel Tanker Explosion Sparks Huge Fire in Nakuru
A huge fire broke out early Saturday morning, June 14, at Barnabas stage in the Pipeline area of Nakuru County, after a fuel tanker exploded. The incident led to several other tankers catching fire, causing panic and chaos in the area.
Videos shared with Newshub.co.ke captured the intense flames engulfing multiple tankers, lighting up the night sky. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and began efforts to control the raging fire, which posed a serious threat to nearby buildings and homes.
Although the exact cause of the explosion is still unknown, initial reports suggest that, fortunately, no injuries or deaths were reported.
However, the explosion and resulting fire caused major disruption along the busy Nakuru–Nairobi Highway, forcing its closure for several hours and leaving motorists stranded.
Authorities urged drivers to avoid the affected stretch of the road and use alternative routes while investigations into the incident began.
Despite the danger, many residents were seen gathering near the scene, observing the fire from a distance. The flames appeared to be largely contained within a specific section, reducing the risk of a wider spread.
As of the time this report was published, both the Nakuru County Government and the police had not yet issued any official statement regarding the cause or full impact of the explosion.
This shocking incident comes just days after another major fire incident in Nairobi’s Kibra Estate. On the night of Wednesday, June 11, a fire swept through Mukungu Village, destroying homes and forcing over 100 families to spend the night outside in the cold.
The Kibra fire heavily affected local traders and homeowners, many of whom lost their businesses and belongings. Residents said the response was delayed due to the narrow roads in the area, which made it difficult for fire engines to access the burning homes.
In response, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku visited the area alongside local leaders, including Member of Parliament Peter Orero. Ruku assured the affected families that the government would provide emergency aid to help them recover from the tragedy.
“Fires have become a serious problem, especially in densely populated informal settlements like Kibra,” Ruku said. “The government is determined to find long-term solutions to these incidents to protect lives and property.”
He added, “This morning, I visited Mukungu Village in Kibra to personally support families affected by the devastating fire. The government will offer emergency relief to help these families rebuild their lives.”
Both the Nakuru and Kibra fire incidents have raised fresh concerns over fire safety, emergency preparedness, and infrastructure challenges in both urban and rural areas.
Many Kenyans are now calling for quicker government action to prevent such disasters in the future.
