Police Officer Shot Dead in Thika During Motorcycle Inspection Incident
A police officer was shot and killed by a suspected thug riding a motorbike in the Cravers area of Thika on Wednesday, sparking fear and shock among local residents.
The tragic incident took place during what was believed to be a routine inspection of motorcycles in the area. The officer, who was dressed in plain clothes, was reportedly conducting checks when the situation suddenly turned deadly.
The slain officer, who held the rank of constable and was attached to the Special Police Investigations Unit (SPIV), had stopped a motorcycle rider for inspection.
According to initial reports, he became suspicious after noticing that the motorbike lacked the special registration code that is typically used to identify licensed boda boda operators.
Witnesses said the officer had removed the motorcycle’s ignition key after discovering the rider did not have the required documentation.
Moments later, the suspect is believed to have pulled out a firearm and shot the officer in the neck at close range.
The wounded officer was quickly rushed to Thika Nursing Home by members of the public and fellow officers who responded to the scene. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
Police officers who later arrived at the crime scene recovered a magazine loaded with bullets, which the suspect is believed to have dropped while fleeing.
Investigators suspect the gun used in the attack was a Ceska pistol, a weapon known to be used in past criminal activities.
Eyewitnesses recalled that the officer and the suspect had initially engaged in a heated argument that appeared to escalate as they crossed to the opposite side of the road.
The verbal exchange turned violent when the thug suddenly pulled out the gun and fired at the officer, sending panic throughout the area.
After the shooting, the suspect is said to have escaped into a nearby estate, where he hijacked another motorbike from a rider who was ferrying a passenger.
Surveillance footage obtained by Newshub.co.ke shows the suspect threatening the second rider with what appears to be the same firearm before seizing the bike and fleeing the scene.
The video also captured the dramatic moment when both the rider and his passenger quickly abandoned the motorcycle and ran for safety, leaving the thug to escape on the stolen bike.
In a later interview, the rider who had been hijacked confirmed that he eventually managed to retrieve his motorbike. He said the suspect had abandoned it during his escape attempt, although it is unclear whether the suspect has been apprehended.
As of now, police have not confirmed the identity of the assailant or his whereabouts, but investigations are ongoing. Authorities have promised to leave no stone unturned in tracking down the suspect and bringing him to justice.
This incident comes at a time when the Kenyan police force is under intense public scrutiny over growing allegations of police misconduct, including cases of brutality and extrajudicial killings.
The killing of an officer in the line of duty adds another layer of concern regarding both officer safety and criminal activity involving firearms in public areas.
