MP Dorothy Muthoni Heckled in Front of President Ruto Over Feed Price Claims

Nominated Member of Parliament Dorothy Muthoni faced strong opposition from farmers during the 10th Annual Dairy Farmers Field Day held in Meru County after she claimed that the government under President William Ruto had successfully reduced the cost of animal feeds.

The highly attended event brought together thousands of livestock farmers from across the region, along with top government officials including President Ruto.

The event aimed to highlight advancements and innovations in the local dairy sector and celebrate the contributions of dairy farmers.

Tension began when MP Muthoni stepped up to address the gathering. At first, the crowd remained calm and attentive as she listed several development projects initiated by the president in support of the dairy industry.

However, the situation quickly changed when she mentioned that the prices of animal feeds had gone down under Ruto’s leadership.

“Let us appreciate the president because he has really helped Meru dairy farmers. He has lowered the cost of animal feeds, and for that we are grateful,” Muthoni said.

Before she could finish her sentence, the crowd erupted in loud protests. Angry farmers began shouting and heckling her, openly disputing her claims. Many in the crowd insisted that the cost of animal feeds had not gone down at all, and that they were still struggling.

“No, no, he hasn’t done that! Where have the prices dropped? We are still suffering!” the farmers shouted in Swahili, expressing their frustration.

Realizing the growing dissatisfaction, Muthoni was forced to pause and acknowledge the outcry. She quickly shifted her remarks, admitting that if feed prices had not dropped, the issue would be addressed. She promised that local leaders, together with the president, would work on resolving the problem.

“If the prices haven’t reduced, then it’s okay, but the president is here with us. We will make sure the matter is looked into and handled properly,” she told the farmers.

The response from the crowd highlighted the rising concerns and struggles farmers are facing due to the high cost of dairy production.

Many have argued that despite government promises, the prices of key inputs such as animal feeds remain too high, making their work more difficult and less profitable.

President Ruto, while speaking at the same event, reassured farmers that his administration remains focused on supporting agriculture.

He emphasized that reducing the cost of milk production is a major priority, and that his government is working on policies and interventions to assist farmers in the dairy sector.

Other notable leaders present included Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Cabinet Secretary for Public Service Geoffrey Ruku, Water and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eric Muga, and several regional and local officials.

Their attendance demonstrated the importance of the event and the government’s commitment to supporting dairy farming across the country.
