The Wiper Democratic Movement has strongly rejected claims that opposition leaders have called for the suspension of nationwide demonstrations scheduled for Wednesday, June 25.
This follows a viral social media post shared on Tuesday, June 24, which alleged that opposition figures—led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua—were advising the youth to cancel the planned protests due to fears of infiltration by hired goons.
The Wiper Party, led by Kalonzo Musyoka, came out firmly to label the post as fake and misleading.
According to the viral message, the opposition had supposedly warned that the government was planning to plant criminals among peaceful protesters to cause chaos.
The post further claimed that hundreds of young men from Nairobi’s informal settlements such as Kibera, Mathare, and Korogocho had been recruited and taken to a secret location for instructions.
It even alleged that around 500 youths from the North Rift were being sworn in within a forest in Nakuru County before being transported to Nairobi. Each of them, the post claimed, was promised a payment of Ksh5,000 to cause disruption during the protests.
The fake statement concluded by urging youths and citizens to skip the demonstrations, citing security concerns. It falsely claimed, “Considering the foregoing, opposition leaders wish to call on our supporters, the youth and all citizens, to stay away from tomorrow’s demonstrations across the country.”
The misleading post quickly raised alarm online, prompting concern among many Kenyans who questioned the intentions behind it. In response,
Wiper Party issued a firm clarification and accused pro-government bloggers of deliberately spreading falsehoods to confuse the public about the opposition’s commitment to the protests.
Setting the record straight, Kalonzo Musyoka emphasized that the opposition leaders—including Rigathi Gachagua, DAP-Kenya party leader Eugene Wamalwa, and Martha Karua of the People’s Liberation Party—remain fully committed to the planned protests.
Kalonzo firmly responded, saying, “To those regime bloggers who thrive on blood and lies and are trying to mislead Kenyans about the position of the united opposition, your attempt at spreading fake news has backfired. You have only made Kenyans more united and determined. We will march tomorrow, June 25, in peace and in memory of our fallen heroes.”
The opposition’s clarification comes ahead of the anticipated nationwide demonstrations today, which mark exactly one year since last year’s major anti-government protests that tragically led to the deaths of many young Kenyans.
Today’s protests are expected to begin early in the morning, with peaceful marches set to take place in several major towns across the country. Protesters will be marching in unity and remembrance of those who lost their lives during the protests held on the same date in 2024.
