Demand for Rigathi Gachagua’s Immediate Arrest Over Alleged Incitement and Violence
Several pro-government Members of Parliament have come out strongly, calling for the immediate arrest of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. They accuse him of fueling violence in the country for his own political benefit.
The group of lawmakers, led by Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, claimed that Gachagua is behind the destruction witnessed in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).
According to Barasa, Gachagua allegedly hired goons from central Kenya and instructed them to vandalise businesses and properties belonging to individuals who do not share his political views.
Speaking during a press briefing held on Thursday morning in Nairobi, Barasa said, “We are demanding the urgent arrest of the former Deputy President. He has been consistently inciting young people and promoting division by targeting those who oppose his political ideology.”
He went on to accuse Gachagua of funding violent groups to attack government institutions and businesses linked to his political opponents. “It’s evident that our former impeached DP has been mobilising resources and assembling goons to wreak havoc on public property and intimidate innocent Kenyans,” Barasa added.
Rongo MP Mark Nyamita also addressed the press conference and supported Barasa’s sentiments. He claimed that the recent demonstrations, which involved a large number of youths, were hijacked by political thugs sent to cause chaos and instability across the country.
Nyamita firmly condemned the unrest and advised Kenyans who are dissatisfied with the current administration to channel their frustrations through the democratic process rather than violence.
“We all want a peaceful Kenya,” he said. “What happened yesterday could plunge our country into serious trouble. We understand that many Kenyans are facing difficulties, but violence is not the solution. If change is needed, the right path is through the ballot box come 2027.”
Migori County Woman Representative Fatuma Zainab also condemned the protests, branding them as a plot to overthrow President William Ruto’s government.
She warned that those behind the demonstrations would face severe consequences for their actions. Zainab said, “What we saw was not a simple protest. It was a coordinated attempt to destabilise the government, and we will not allow that. Those responsible must be held accountable.”
The MPs’ demands and warnings come just a day after thousands of Kenyans across the country held mass demonstrations to honour the lives of young protesters who were killed during last year’s anti-finance bill protests outside Parliament.
The memorial protests started peacefully but quickly turned violent after clashes broke out between demonstrators and police officers. The confrontations resulted in multiple injuries and some fatalities.
According to a report by Amnesty International Kenya, at least eight people were shot during the protests, while more than 400 others sustained various injuries. Of those injured, 83 were admitted to hospitals with serious conditions.
The escalating tension and rising political blame game have sparked concern among citizens, with many calling for restraint and peaceful dialogue to address the nation’s challenges.
